R'mer grinned. "Well, I wouldn't want to go to a Gather with clothes that clashed with my dragon. The rest of the time, nobody really notices."
Tinth was relatively easy to match to, of course. Goldriders had to have the hardest time with that. "I'm glad I just got a nice, ordinary blue, though. Nobody looking to me for anything other than flying in the wings and looking after my dragon."
Nobody was sure HOW to treat Gwenduinne. And then there were the charcoals, with nobody knowing what size they would grow to or what kind of flame they would produce.
The barred riders had gone through the same thing.

“No, definitely not a Gather,” she nodded. Even Aleyi thought about how she looked at festivals. Brooke still looked better than anything she could put together though, but it wasn’t like she minded that. Jerglith probably looked better than either of them though, but he, of course, mostly stayed on the heights and less noticed.
“Me too.” Aleyi smiled. “But enough about dragons, have you had anything non-Weyr related happening? News from home?” The comment suddenly made her realize she really knew nothing about R’mer’s life before coming to the Weyr.
Compared to the new life they all started at Nyocia, not to mention everything else that went on at the Weyr, histories weren’t something she thought about much… but then, she sometimes felt like she was the only one here who still kept in contact with family and home. But now that the thought had come to mind, she couldn’t help but feel curiosity’s sharp pinch.

A look crossed the bluerider's face. "I never get news from home."
He had hoped his father would forgive him when he Impressed...but it had not happened. Had he bonded a bronze or tan...with the proof that came with that his basic orientation remained towards women... A blue? That was even more evidence that he was...unnatural. Undesirable. A poor influence.
He hated to think how his father would have reacted to the green R'mer had honestly been more than half expecting. "My only family is here."
He meant Tinth. He meant his friends. The Weyr was where he belonged and if he did sire a child...then his father would never even know he had grandchildren. He was determined of that.

Aleyi paused. “Oh.” She recognized the look on R’mer’s face; it was one she had seen plenty of times before, on Beka and others. They had escaped something coming here, and she had yet to gather the courage to ask anyone about it. R’mer would be no exception.
It wasn’t something she could compare to. Aleyi had left a perfectly good life, more or less abandoned plenty of friends and family, to come to Nyocia. It wasn’t something she really regretted- she couldn’t quite imagine life without Jerglith now- but all she had left behind were good things. No bad memories, very little connection with the feeling.
“It’s a pretty good family here at the Weyr though.” She smiled. “Can’t get much better than dragons.”

"Can't get much better than having one person you can always absolutely trust and absolutely love," R'mer said, the look fading, replaced by a smile.
"Tinth might be volatile. But he is always there, and I can rely on him for everything important."
R'mer knew what happened to riders who lost their dragons. He could imagine it, sometimes. He could not imagine carrying on.
But he had Tinth, and he was determined nothing would ever happen to the blue. He was as careful as he could...so they could grow old and gray together. "So, I look after him. Sure, we bicker sometimes. Actually, we bicker quite a lot."

“Bickering’s nothing new though.” Aleyi grinned. “Kind of a requirement for families, I think.” Not that she liked it at all. Along with not being so good at being anything past jokingly rude to someone, she had never felt she had the skill with words to word out a victory.
“And no matter how much you do with Tinth, I’ll bet Brooke finds a reason to argue more with everyone else she knows.” The Gold, always one to deepen her hole in an attempt to defend herself, chattered at Aleyi irritably.
“I bet she could even beat Nayarath in a grumpiness contest.” Then the larger Gold would probably eat her though, and then it would hardly matter.

R'mer laughed. "I think queens all have grumpy streaks in them. I know I'm glad I couldn't have Impressed a queen dragon...and have no interest in another firelizard."
He had his blues, and that was more than enough for him, although knowing his luck he'd attract another flitter sooner or later. There were certainly enough clutching females about the Weyr.
"And I think it is...but again, I don't talk to my family any more. Not so happy with my choice of career. Or my choice of mates."
The temptation to find some cute greenrider willing to be on his arm at the next Gather and parade him in front of his father...grew for a moment. Just to be mean. Just to get some small measure of revenge on his so-called family.
