"I don't see why a Gold wouldn't." Not that Jackie was likely to consider any of Nyocia's queens had any flaws. Not Wuith either. Considering that they were parenting her dragon, they had to make good hatchlings.
"They'd hatch at night?" That wasn't too enormous a problem for her, past that it would be dark. "Can't dragons not see then?" That was one thing she was pretty sure she knew about them.

"Maybe not the middle of the night, but they're babies. Of course they'll come at an inconvenient time...before breakfast, right as everyone's sitting down for supper or noonmeal...they'll think of something."
Her tone was more amused, than anything else. Kari did know a little bit about babies. Of course, runners, say, always waited until their owners left to foal. Probably deliiberately, the contrary animals.
"They'll hatch when they're ready, not a moment sooner or later."

"That's true." Quip most often had her young really early. There was a good side to her having to leave her mate behind. Jackie hadn't really thought to compare the dragons to other animals, but most did tend to birth at inconvenient times. Or so she had heard. Jackie didn't know a lot about it.
She considered that. "Do they ever hatch late then? Like, all the eggs hatch and a week later another one does?" What made all the dragonets come out at the same time? Well... probably that they were all laid at the same time. These weren't birds. But it was still maybe possible.

Kari shook her head. "It's never been heard of. They always all hatch together." She considered that. "Personally, I wonder if it's the humming. If they can hear it through their shells and that makes sure even those that might be tempted to stay in their eggs longer come out."
If the dragons noticed the eggs were ready and maybe twitching, but the humming was not just a welcome to the babies but some kind of...signal.
It was as good an explanation as any.

"That makes sense." And that was about the last of Jackie's questions for the moment. She stretched absently. "Do you have any non-chore pastimes until the hatching?"
If she could keep that to a minimum, she would. That nearly everyone else in the Weyr was keeping a constant eye out for Candidates to give work to was a problem. There had to be something to do that didn't involve work. Or sneaking around actively evading it, which Jackie had already been doing enough of.

Kari considered. "Me? I've been keeping busy...not that I enjoy work, but I enjoy it more than wondering about what Nayarath will clutch and when it will hatch."
Which was true. She had changed her approach slightly...she had been completely relaxed for her first Hatching, but the fact that she had not Impressed... It almost confused her, although she stuck by the sensible explanation that there had not been enough *female* dragons. No male, surely... "So...yeah. I'm not very helpful. Although I've found that if you *look* busy nobody will bother you."

Hmm... spoilsport. There wasn't a lot else to think about until the hatching, except maybe boys. But there weren't many male Candidates at the moment, and flirting with a rider would only get her work.
"Pity Weyrs are practically designed to keep people stuck on foot in." The lower caverns could only be explored so much; Jackie preferred running around outside but, considering how many tasks took place out there, it was risky business.
"Because I don't think looking busy splashing in the lake will quite cut it." Plus she was still supposed to be stuck in the barracks for a while, but Meagen didn't seem to be checking on her. They ought to do something.

"Well, whatever else, remember this is all temporary. Although I hear that we won't have time for *anything* for like the first three months of weyrlinghood."
The young dragons kept their riders very busy indeed for that initial period.
"And you're right...besides, we go to the lake, we'll end up helping wash a dragon," Kari predicted. Last time, she'd been cornered by the white rider.
Not much dragon, but he showed every speck of dirt AND demanded he be spotless. He had a bronze-sized ego in that smaller-than-green body, Kari thought. She was rather glad he wasn't *her* dragon.

"So we may as well make the most of having time now," Jackie said decisively. If she was going to be extremely busy soon... well, that was more or less what she translated such futuristic statements.
She expected caring for a baby dragon would be fun though. More work than caring for, say, a young Kagen- a lot more work- but she could talk to a dragon. That would make all the difference.
"You haven't found any secret places here?" She frowned. "Or... I guess it'd be hard to keep these hidden with from dragons." Maybe not. Maybe they could just settle in where they were and attempt a rousing round of Dragon Poker. Not that she had cards, but they could be gotten.
