Aleyi coughed to stifle a laugh. Kids who bait whers and canines? Yeah, that had been her. At least she didn't anymore? In fact, she and her pals had gained the sense to stop well before she was Searched.
She had never baited dragons though. She couldn't imagine anyone ever doing that. "Good thing too. A bite from a dragon and there'd be nothing left." They were a little too large to mess around with, the queens and Bronzes especially, which really seemed like the only ones that would bite someone. Maybe Charcoals too. The rest seemed too generally easygoing.
Not that she saw a problem with that. "Yeah. And fire-lizards too. They seem pretty nice." Even Brooke, kind of. She could be rude, but she, luckily, wasn't aggressive.

"Firelizards just want whatever you have, as long as what you have can be eaten," R'mer pointed out, mildly.
Even the wild ones, sometimes, would make pests of themselves over people food. "I think they get away with it because they are, after all, cute. Dragons were not cute. Whers were definitely not cute. But firelizards had cuteness down. And pathetic looks, for that matter, although Tinth had a decent one of those. But then, dragons could get what they wanted from riders without needing to do anything other than be who they were.

"True." Aleyi laughed. "And maybe if we didn't always give it to them, they wouldn't be so friendly." She still doubted they would bite anyone; more likely they would just fly away and pester someone else.
"Being cute can get you out of anything, huh?" She spoke mostly to Pip, who had trotted over to her to beg for some scratches. "Either that or being too chicken to get into trouble in the first place." That was Tuck. He was naturally outside the realm of suspicion, since she only really expected him to follow Pip while she was up to no good, not join her. If he ever did, he got away with it even better.

"No, they have us too well trained for us not to give them things," R'mer pointed out, cheerfully. "Far too well trained."
It was true...Thunder could get whatever he wanted out of him, as could his barred. They pretty much had him trained.
"Certainly our dragons do, but I suppose we can't complain about that. We all knew...more or less...what we were signing up for. If not the specifics." Had he been warned about Tinth...
...nah. He'd still have come to the Weyr. The blue was a crazy dragon, but he was HIS crazy dragon.

Aleyi wasn't too sure what she thought of her pets having her trained. It was probably true, but she wasn't about to say out loud that she agreed. Nope. Maybe she would even... try to ignore her... flitters... nope. Not that either. Tuck was just a little too adorable, crouching there hoping for some scratches.
"Dragons are big anyway. Even if they didn't have us trained with pathetic looks and whatever, I'd do what they want." It wasn't as embarrassing to be at the beck and call of something that could easily swallow her.
Jerglith wouldn't, but were this some separate dimension where dragons didn't use a friendly relationship and silly antics to get what they wanted out from their riders, she certainly wouldn't cross him. Dragonriding wouldn't be any fun that way though.

R'mer grinned. "True...but most of them are big softies who wouldn't hurt anything...other than their dinner."
Dragon feeding was enough to make one worry about dragon's sticking to the 'don't eat people' rule. But to riders, it was a fact of life...any candidate that felt too sorry for the herdbeasts generally dropped out.
"Even Tinth, as crazy as he is, wouldn't hurt anyone...well, except a green who expected him to stay on her ledge after a flight."
That would involve consistency in behavior, which was the one personality trait the insane blue lacked. Insane in the best way, of course.

"And I'm glad that's the case." Aleyi laughed. She didn't want to worry about dragons hurting her, but she also didn't want to worry about them being too soft to hunt for themselves. She had already been through the phase where she had to prepare all of Jerglith's meals, and it definitely wasn't something she wanted to go back to.
"It's a good thing they haven't asked him to do that yet." Few enough greens did, at least. "I'm sure Jerglith would happily take his place though." Mermaiyeth had kept him around for a while, and he had thoroughly enjoyed preening and looking good for her. But when she didn't rise, and another dragon did, he left that ledge without a second thought.
Dragons.

R'mer laughed. "Likely he would. Tinth just doesn't have any sense of loyalty to anyone other than me."
R'mer sometimes thought that if the blue hadn't had to Impress, he wouldn't have any sense of loyalty to anyone but himself. Or maybe even not that, given Tinth was almost a different dragon every day. "Jerglith is a cuddler, isn't he."
Tinth wasn't, although he did appreciate the occasional eyeridge scratching. What dragon didn't?

"At least he's got that though." A dragon without a sense of loyalty to its rider would be trouble. An enormous fire-lizard, at best. That was the last thing they needed.
"Yes." Aleyi grinned. She didn't mind, even if it meant that whenever he was within her reach, he was poking his nose into either herself or whatever she was doing. He had quite a nose to do that with too, but he had gained plenty of experience on how to keep that from being too much of a problem. For himself, anyway.

R'mer shrugged. "Probably only because he has to. I often think it's a good job he's not a wher."
Whers, after all, could manage quite well without their handlers. "But then I wouldn't have him, and I have to say we fit together pretty well."
R'mer was quiet, intelligent and thoughtful. He handled the volatile mess of dragon that was Tinth with considerable...the word was probably aplomb. But he didn't think of it that way. They were partners, that was all.

Aleyi was pretty sure that the fact Tinth wasn't a wher was an absolutely spectacular one, not just good. He wouldn't even be Tinth then, he would be... Rumsk, or however the whers did their names. If that was, it was hardly attractive.
She was glad dragons came with their own names. As much as Aleyi liked her own name, Aleyith didn't sound nearly as good. Plus then Jerglith would have a girl name.
"Yeah, you do." Aleyi was thinking a little more about names now, but she could at least manage to agree with R'mer. What he was saying was... kind of along the lines she was thinking. Or at least where her train of thought had started.

"Eh. Dragons don't pick people who don't fit with them pretty well," R'mer noted, thoughtfully. "Whers are more inclined to go for the person with the best food."
Of course, there *was* the traditional prohibition against thinking of food on the hatching sands. A hard one to obey, that, much harder than wearing robes and sandals. Not thinking about something was tough. But there were other things to think about on the sands, like not being bowled over by an over-excited hatchling. They always seemed to be so glad to greet the world, hatchlings, of any species. Not that he'd ever seen a wher hatching. Those tended to be...private affairs.

"Pretty-much like flitters. Except a lot more scary." Fire-lizards didn't usually hurt those they bonded to, and when they did, it was an accident. Aleyi was pretty sure it was a requirement for whers to take a chunk out of their handler.
She really didn't understand at all why anyone would want a wher. They were useful, kind of, so maybe some people were just expected to take on the responsibility. It was a good thing she had Jerglith, and didn't have to worry about anything like that happening to her.

"Yeah. I wouldn't want to mess with a wher, even a small green one." Oddly enough, the new colors had not shown up in whers, at least not yet. A strange thing, that, R'mer could not help but think. And no white wher had ever hatched, either.
Maybe any whites had been mistaken for duds. Maybe white dragons still were, sometimes, if something didn't happen to help them break out. They were just so small when they were hatched. So small and so seemingly fragile.

"Me neither." Lucky for them, the chances of their ever having to were pretty small. No whers at a Weyr, and no whers out when dragons were, so they probably wouldn't run into them at the holds.
She flicked another scrap of food across the table, but this time only Pip went after it. Tuck had been filling up for a while now on the contents of her plate- now gone, past some crumbs- and saw no reason to work for more.

R'mer glanced at Tuck. "It's a wonder our firelizards don't get fat. I suppose they burn it off flying around."
Certainly, the Weyr's firelizards managed to keep themselves well fed. "Never seen a fat dragon, for that matter. Although I suppose it could happen, if the rider was particularly lazy or neglectful."
Even on days off, it was a good idea to go out for at least a quick flight, unless the dragon was really tired. Tinth seldom was...the blue always seemed to have plenty of energy.

"I guess so. I don't know if that applies to Brooke though." While she was the least friendly of Aleyi's trio, she was also the clingiest. Of course... she was also far less of an avid eater than the others. That might explain it.
"I feel like I've heard about in the past with queen dragons? But people might just have meant that the queen didn't blood her kill and was too heavy for a good mating flight, not just flight in general." Aleyi shrugged. The dragon was... temporarily fat? Maybe that applied.
Probably not. But if a dragon ever did get fat, Aleyi imagined it would be a queen, and the same probably applied to fire-lizards. If they weren't so concerned with their looks, it would probably happen.

R'mer hrmed. "Maybe. It does seem to be something the scrolls go on and on about with queens. That it's easy for them to eat too much and get too heavy for a long flight."
He shrugged. "I'm glad I don't have to worry about that. Tinth does...he likes his greens and barreds, but he doesn't often catch one."
Which was probably a good thing. The blue might get an ego if he was *too* successful with the ladies, and he was more than enough trouble without one of those. Well, without one of them all the time, as so much depended on the blue's current mood.

"That'd be pretty funny to see happen to Brooke." She wasn't sure if that applied to flitters... but it would be funny. More funny than if it happened to Nayarath. That probably wouldn't bode well for the Weyr, for multiple reasons. A few of them would apply to Brooke if that happened to her though, unfortunately.
"Well, you can't have him catching too many, right?" That was something that probably wouldn't go over too well either. Not with Tinth, and probably not with Jerglith either.
At least it hadn't happened yet... and considering the late lack of rising females, probably wasn't about to happen.

OOC: Totally should send Freyjath up. These blues need something to chase!
"Besides, it wouldn't be fair. Shouldn't let one male hog all of the females. Of course, why do i get the feeling we're going to get a rash of flights soon."
Probably because there hadn't been one in a while. Half the Weyr was likely due or overdue. "Tinth has been eyeing Freyjath," he noted. "Although I don't think she likes him much."
Not that Tinth had had a chance to chase the pale green. Luck had got in the way of that since the younger dragon had matured. R'mer wasn't sure whether to be glad or disappointed by that. T'mar was at least male, but really not quite his physical type.
