A Lord Holder and a queenrider were dead. Furthermore...more to the point as it were...they had been murdered.
Silia felt a certain sense of duty. If there was one creature truly meant for scaring off...or more permanently dealing with...troublemakers, it was a wher. So, she had been out most nights patrolling lately. Now she was setting off again, wrapping a scarf around her against the night chill.
Her eyes had adapted almost permanently to the darkness. Silisk, eager to be off, wore a simple harness that would allow him to carry her short distances if need be, and also let her use him for support.
"Well. You ready, fellow?"
The blue answered by tilting his eyeridge and shamelessly demanding one last scritch before the pair departed. Silia felt no envy for riders, who spoke to their partners in words. Theirs was a deeper communication, in her opinion.
"I guess that's 'almost'. Silly blue." To him, she showed true affection rare in her dealings with humans.

Itunas was weary, knowing how his once students felt about the recent tragic events so close to home. He knew many were out late at night patrolling, thinking of ways to find leads and overall wanting to show that they still had a place among the people. He couldn't blame them for wanting to be heroes, a few Turns ago he would have felt the same way. Itusk galloped beyond view, the occasional hiss being heard to be a warning for any that dared approach with ill intentions.
It was true the whers should be on guard around the Hold, but with no leader so far elected to take Teval's place no one seemed able to authorize the guard.
On the other side, what was the point? What could whers do outside when they needed to be inside? Teval had been found deep within the Hold, beside the violetrider Shandor. Mentioning violetriders...
Lianly walked by Itunas's side, her normally happy face had darkened since the rumors had spread. They hit the poor girl hard, only 15 turns old and helpless to do anything. If Shandor had been targeted, then her sister Inolyn could be in danger. There was little proof to suggest this true, only enough to show they were murdered but the real motive was yet to be discovered. In fact no one seemed to know what to do about the situation except to be suspicious of everyone and everything.
Liansk was as quiet as ever as he walked by his handler's side. The two were normally never out of sight of each other and now was no different. He had met the violet queen Jorindath, she liked him and he in return. It was hard to dislike the dragon that treated all equally, whether they be fire lizard, dragon or wher. To think someone wanted to hurt such a lovely creature and her bonded, it just couldn't happen!
Lianly placed a comforting hand on his dark blue hide, she felt just the same way...

Silia lifted a hand as Itunas and Lianly approached. "We were just heading out on patrol."
Under the circumstances, even she would not turn down company, especially the bulk of Itusk. Larger whers were even more intimidating than the blues and greens.
Itusk, however, had faded into the night, leaving only the other blue, Liansk. Silisk sniffed and then snorted in his direction. HE didn't think they needed backup.
"Be nice, Silisk." Liansk was a dark shadow too...had she not known he was a blue, she could never have divined his color in this light. Everything was, for the handlers, shades of grey.
Including, perhaps, the motivations for murder.

Liansk didn't even flinch at Silisk, knowing his brother blue well. While they hatched from the same clutch, blood was all they really shared. One was agressive and active, the other quiet and defensive. Each to their own.
"There are too many possibilities for any to go patrolling around alone at this time. You might have a wher, but he cant protect you from everything." Itunas finally spoke up. There were too many cotholds, too many caverns and hiding holes in this region. Even if a murderer or many of them were hiding out here somewhere it would be by luck alone to discover them. The dragons would have a better chance, looking from the sky.
"It would be easier if could guard the Hold rather then run aimlessly in circles..." Lianly spoke up, but there was little they could do about that for the moment. Without co-operation for the Hold there was no where proper for their whers to hide from the sun during the days.

Silia studied the other handler. "The Hold won't cooperate. But I'm blowed if I'm sitting around twiddling my sharding thumbs."
She knew that Itunas outranked her, as she was, after all, only a bluehandler. He could order her to stay and it seemed he was about to do so, but she could sharding well let him know it was under protest. Catching her mood, Silisk growled slightly, long blue tail lashing like a feline.
He might be right, but were they supposed to just SIT here? The murderer might go after Inolyn next, or the tanriders, or...who knew.
Without even knowing for sure whether the target had been Teval or Shador...

"You're not the only one who feels that way!" Lianly suddenly snapped. The normally placid and quiet girl was not known the speak up so, but the younger girl was growing up and maturing. She was showing more of the spark that Sabre had seen in her sister, but the dragonriders couldn't have this one. She belonged to the whers. "Inolyn may be able to look after herself but there is no way on Pern that I'll let them get to my sister!"
A hand on her shoulder made her flinch in surprise, but it was only Itunas. "I said nothing about ignoring the situation, only that it was stupid to go alone. Had you waited, the others have split up in to two more groups. We still wait on the Hold's decision, with no one in charge its hard to agree on anything."
As if sensing the tense emotions, the bronze bulk of Itusk slinked back into the group with eyes glowing yellow. With no female wher around Itusk would be hardly calmed.

Silia let out a breath. "I don't care who they're trying to get to...no offense. I don't want them getting to *anyone*." Silisk padded up next to her again, but set himself into a tense position, wings half spread.
"They should be left out in Thread for murdering a queen."
Even if it was a dragon queen and a violet, it was still a queen...and Silisk's instinctive respect of such spilled over into his rider, the blue's anger visible in every line of his stance.
