An answering smile rose at his reassurance, and she drew away slowly, pulling her knees up to her chest and wrapping her arms around them. She figured she'd taken him by surprise, and even now she was slowly calming her heart rate down to something vaguely normal. She was relaxing and as she did, Mermaiyeth turned her attention back to Kayth, a physical sign that Beka was in control again, enough not to panic.
Exactly. Listen to him. He makes sense. Maybe not at the weyr, Beka had always been truly careful with her words at the weyr but there had been times when she was sure that she wasn't making sense. Her grasp on talking hadn't been any stronger than her grasp on reading and writing still was. She'd come from never having to talk, to being asked seemingly endless questions, shoved into situations that required her to talk.
Once again taken by surprise by his question, she automatically glanced at Mermaiyeth for reassurance, or perhaps the answer, she wasn't sure. Who was she? Really? She was Beka, or Rebekah, depending who called her. She'd been nothing, a no one, a problem that needed to be eradicated. Then she'd come to the weyr, Mermaiyeth and then Valiant had seen something in her, she was Mermaiyeth's rider, but were they a part of who 'Beka' was? Was it possible to feel like two people sometimes?
"Um... Mermaiyeth's bonded... A dragonrider?" The latter part of teh statement was said as a question, Beka almost afraid he'd shake his head and claim she was her first thought, still nothing.
You are Mine. You are not nothing.
