Kora was stretched out on her dragon’s broad back while Nayarath paddled cheerfully around in the surf the crashed against a more rocky side of the island. Lilac and Squeak had a similar set up, the water-shy Kagen somehow convinced out onto the ocean by the Violet. He didn’t look nearly as relaxed as his keeper, sitting in a tight wad of gray fur that kept him as far on Lilac’s back and as far out of the water as possible, as he was. Soot was curled on a sunny boulder, just out of the reach of the waves, always one to take advantage of the moments when the many females in his family weren’t getting after him for something.
But even all the warmth, the light spray of the ocean keeping her from getting too hot, and the general calm atmosphere couldn’t keep Kora from feeling a little anxious. This was where she could always come when she wanted a break; people rarely came by and the untouched land just had a way of distracting her from everything else in her life. It wasn’t working today though.
Nyocia was moving along fine. As Weyrwoman, Kora was very capable of keeping the lower caverns in working order, clean, and well-supplied. So far D’mas was doing a good job as Weyrleader; sure there hadn’t been any bad threadfalls lately, but he had gotten through what had tried to reach Pern’s surface just fine as of yet. ((Sparrow likes to imagine there are still Threadfalls happening even though we never play them. xP)) The rogues had basically left, even though one might come back every once in a while for reasons she really didn’t need to think about.
No, the problem was how disconnected she felt from everyone. Nayarath was a friendly enough dragon, but she was a queen, and the senior queen at that. She had earned herself a reputation for being frightening and mean. Kora wasn’t the sort who felt capable of working around that. For all her work, she still felt somewhat useless, incompetent. It had shown when the rogue Brownrider showed up at the Weyr, in her dealings with her other rogues, shards, it had even been all too apparent after Nayarath’s first hatching when Sabre had come by and made a fool of her.
But you’re perfectly able to rise above that. Nayarath snorted softly and splashed a little water on her rider with a flick of her tail. I wouldn’t have picked you if I didn’t think so.
I don’t know, dear heart. Kora smiled slightly nonetheless and sat up to brush the water from her face.
I’m always right. Nayarath rumbled. Maybe all you require is a little thinning of the herds, you function better in smaller groups. Then we can raise it again and it’ll be alright.
“I’m not sure I like the sound of that, Nayarath.” Kora looked down at the Gold in shock. And I functioned better with Y’xem, that’s what it comes down too.
Nayarath raised a lip in an irritated snarl. What did I just say? I’m always right. Kayth’s is plenty good enough, anyways.
“Okay, okay. But I still… I don’t know that I agree with you.”
You’re coming along nicely already.
