Steven looked at the list of chore sections. Great. i've got one of the most boring of chores- nothing to do unless someone asks me to help 'em! he thought to himself. But he went to do it anyways.
Its cool and sunny out, so i guess its not so bad a chore. Steven thought. He wandered around the weyrbowl, finally deciding to head towards the crystal lake. Steven smiled at dragonriders who passed him, but none stopped to give him a chore to do. he moved closer to the lake until he could hang his feet over the bank and into the cool water. "anyone need any help?!" He called out...

"You should be careful in who's hearing you say that. You might end up having to wash a queen dragon." The voice that came from not far away was distinctly feminine and quite lovely...but did not belong to any of Nyocia's queenriders.
Gwen rested against the shoulder of the smallest dragon on Pern (albeit the one who showed the most dirt). "You should take advantage of nobody needing anything and enjoy the sunshine. Its a nice day."
Tyrth rumbled, lowering his head towards the boy. Although small for a dragon, he was still quite a bit larger than, say, a runnerbeast. His ivory hide showed faint shimmers of other dragon colors in the light. And a few streaks of dirt.
White shows *everything*, after all.

Steven looked around wildly when he heard someone answer him. It was a feminine voice... Then he saw who it was, leaning on Tyrth. It was Gwenduinne, Gwen, the White rider! Well, now, he hadnt thought anyone would answer him, and especially didnt think it would be Gwen. She was pretty, but that- he told himself- shouldnt matter.
Steven scrambled up from his crtoss-legged position, grinning. "oh, well, yeah- that wouldnt be too good" He chuckled at his folly. "I'm surprised i forgot not to be that... vague about my questions in the weyr!" Steven was used to having to wash down something small, like a horse, not a dragon as big as a gold or violet! "Thanks, Gwenduinne- can i say Gwen? its much easier that saying your full name!" He said.
Tyrth was a handsome dragon, all white and sparklingly so, with those rainbow colors shimmering faintly... Steven didnt think Tyrth was that small... more that other dragons were too big. he could have laughed at himself for that line of thinking...

Gwen laughed. "Oh, everyone calls me Gwen, most of the time, including Tyrth."
Although she thought her dragon was, rather than having any difficulty with her name, doing his best to give her the honor he felt she deserved as a rider.
Tyrth rumbled again, softly, lowering his head to regard the Candidate. "Not that you don't need to get used to having to wash dragons. You'll be spending a lot of time doing it as a weyrling...they have to be bathed more than once a day to start with, as opposed to every few days and after Threadfall. Of course, Tyrth is vain, he likes to be bathed a lot."
Vain? Me?
"As vain as any bronze."
And, of course, he showed every speck of dirt. However, he also went with everything. That helped when Gathers came around.

Steven was startled a bit when Tyrth rumbled again and leaned his head in close to peer at him. it was a bit unnerving, to say the least, but not frightening... steven liked Tyrth quite alot, though of course he didnt know the dragon at all. "well, i hope my dragon- if i impress, that is, wont be too vain!" he laughed. But he wasnt serious- whatever dragon he impressed, steven would be happy he impressed... as long as it wasnt a Charcoal, they were.. the oposite of him. "I can see where white might be hard to work with, since everything shows on it, but its alsothe nicest, purest color, you know? Anyway, I've washed animals and taken care of 'em before- i had a nice horse at my home Hold. when he was very young, i had to pay constant attention to him. A dragon's just... a little bit bigger, and my mind will be linked to theirs- that might make things easier, right?" Maybe he would impress a Tan.... that would be nice, or a brown... Miri, his sister, he thought might impress a barred- he couldnt see her riding a green, because she wanted an actual... relationship, not have to know that whoever her dragon... was flown by... didnt like girls... But a barred, she would be happy, and he, he really liked browns. "Can Tyrth fly for as long as other dragons?" he asked- he was curious about whether the dragon size hindered or helped their stamina...
Steven leaned back in the warm sunlight. for the end of summer, it was a very warm day, and the sun burned down now from its highest point. he dipped his feet in the clear water of the lake... she was right, enjoy the warm, fair weather..

Gwen shook her head. "No, but he is incredibly agile. And surprisingly strong in short runs...despite his small size, we can take passengers...well, one. Or carry extra firestone."
She patted the white's shoulder. "Tyrth is not *that* much smaller than the smallest of the greens we have here, which I think is Amirinth. Freyjath doesn't look like she'll be much bigger, though."
That green had to be close to full grown. "What color do you want...or are you one of those who tries not to express a preference?"
She could see him with a brown, she supposed...but first impressions did not always mean anything, and weird stuff had been happening with dragon impressions lately. The way things were going, a girl would Impress bronze.

"It makes sence that he's more agile, but then again, weren't the old dragons nearly as small as Tyrth?" he meant the original dragons of pern. "Well, since he's such a hassel to wash, would you like some help at some point in time?" wow. he didnt really know her, and yet beneth his bland wish to complete his chore, he kinda liked her. "I mean, if you are going to be washing him- if you're not, then im happy to just lie here in the sun!" he chuckled. the sun was nice and warm today, surprisingly for this time of turn.

Gwen nodded. "We think Tyrth may be about the same size as the ancient queens." She grinned. "I'm washing him...come on in." She was stripping off her boots to enter the water.
"But size isn't the only factor in the equation. If you actually really look at a green then a brown, you'll see that they're built differently too. Their wings are a slightly different shape and size, and a brown is broader across the chest. The dragon colors are meant to fill different roles in the wings."
Really, if it was true that the ancients had essentially created dragons from firelizards, they had been geniuses.

Steven grinned, and took off the light sandles he was wearing, rolling up the ends of his pants so they wouldn't get wet. "Cool. I guess I've never really noticed the differences that much- but now that you mention it, they are very different in build" Steven stepped into the water and winced, stepping back out. "It's colder than the air!" He exclaimed. somehow , he'd thought it might be as warm in the water as out of it, but he knew his lessons well enough- it was wishfull thinking. Grinning sheepishly, he continued into the water and looked at Gwen for guidance. He'd washed a horse before... never a dragon, really. "so, what do i do?" ((ooc: This is taking place before the third candidate lesson, right?- the one on washing and oiling dragons-- otherwise i'll change this, but i wasnt sure))
