Kari sat on a rock in the bowl. She had done all of her chores early and had earned herself some free time.
Except she would rather have kept working. She was trying not to let anything effect her. She was far from the only one to be left Standing. Inolyn was sure she was 'special'.
Part of her wondered if she was actually simply...not as suited to a dragonrider as she thought. Of course, there would always be a place for her here. The Weyr could use her as an entertainer. These riders, she had noticed, knew how to party.
But she could do that anywhere. She shook her head. "Get over yourself, Kari. Sure, you're disappointed, but the senior gold will be rising soon."
And Nayarath was bound to lay a good sized clutch. With plenty of greens and barreds in it.

"At least you were lucky enough to live here." A voice spoke out from the rocks before a sleepy face appeared. She looked about 15, and something looked oddly familiur about her face or maybe it was her hair. Lianly wasn't that used to being in sunlight this much, these hours she kept still hadnt settled down. The girl had settled on this very rock earlier, but the erge to nap had overwhelmed her and as soon as she had lain down on some somefortable gress had fallen asleep. Soon she would be returning home however, and back to normal.
Getting up and brushing herself off she sat down next to the candidate. "From what I heard, people are putting in bets as to what you'll impress next hatching. At least they haven't given up on you."

Kari grinned a bit. "I've actually noticed that weyrfolk will bet on anything. Especially hatchings. There's already a pool on whether or not there will be a queen egg in Nayarath's next clutch. And I know a lot of people predicted there would only be one bronze in the last one and lost marks."
Familiar. She couldn't place the girl, but she was sure and certain she'd seen her somewhere. Well, the weyr was big. It was not *that* big. She'd probably sat near her at evenmeal or something like that.
"As for what I'll Impress. I'm tempted to bet against myself Impressing. Then if I don't, I can spend the money on sweets and cheer myself up."

"Thats no way to think about it! But then again, I was only a second choice..." It was true, she never would be where she was if it hadnt been for her sister. Everyone loved her sister, to be compared to her meant to be found plain and disappointing. It wasn't fair, but what could you do?
"My sister was wanted by both the dragons and the whers, but the dragons got her first. Sabre was so mad, but she always seems mad to me. So they got me, but I was nothing but a spark to her flame. Maybe I would have been better off with the dragons too?" To fly in the day, then to frolic in the night? It was a dream and nothing more. Nearly everyone of Pern had it, to most it was an honor to rider a dragon let alone Impress one.

Kari shook her head. "It's a joke. And second choice? Nobody's a second choice."
So, this was Inolyn's sister. She wondered what kind of wher...ah, yes, blue knot. The beast would, of course, be asleep this day and age.
"No offense, but I don't think I'd want a wher. I'm not that much of a night person." Although whers were useful and even handsome, in their own way, she definitely wanted a dragon.
Although if she stood for a few clutches and then there were wher eggs, she might consider it. Maybe. If it was that or be left without a partner?

"I wasn't sure if i wanted one either." Not many youngsters considered it an option. The uglier and smaller cousins of the dragons could bearly fly, were only active at night and the bonding process was far from Impression. They also had a mind of their own and could easily leave you for someones else or turn wild should it feel the need or be mistreated.
"I was told they were impressed by Inolyn, and felt her bloodline might have what it took to be a Handler. I guess they were right, Liansk is such a sweet beast but it was far from the queen they wanted to bond with Inolyn." But no egg had hatched a queen, and the whers weren't as picky as dragons. Lianly had taken the blue she had chosen/been given and together they had their adventures in the night.
"Whers arent for everyone, its hard to adapt to the changes they make you go through. And apart from that there arent even that many benifits to it, just you and the wher."

Kari nodded. "I think I'd rather have a dragon. Whers are quite attractive creatures, but they can't fly properly." She flickered a grin. "I want some nice, agile green or barred dragon to show off with," she admitted.
The fancy flying, the agility, the sheer risk and wind of flying one of the smaller fighting dragons was what the dancer longed for. Sure, it was a dangerous life...greens and blues took risks the larger dragons could not. Although they did not get threadscored more often, per se, they were grounded more often by other injuries...strained wings, sprains and strains of the rider keeping up with the movement. And when they did get hit, it tended to be worse.
