A thousand voices cry at night
A thousand voices wail
A thousand voices cry in fright
A thousand voices fail

400 turns have passed since the time of the white dragon. AVAIS plan worked perfectly and the red star was blasted from its orbit. Pern kissed its old enemy, the voracious spores called thread, goodbye. The Dragonriders, now out of a job as perns protectors, found themselves new occupations. Some of them defended the herds on southern continent from the large felines and other hazards that the continent was famous for. Others took on a new occupation in the starcraft as had been suggested during the period of the white dragon, to deflect any meteorites that might strike pern.
Over time the weyrs dwindled in numbers, until but two weyrs remained. One on the western continent, famous for its large observatory, Skyguard Weyr. This weyr was the one specialized in the starcraft, deflecting meteors from perns atmosphere. The other Weyr was Monaco Weyrhold in the South. Here the dragonriders that kept the feline population in check resided.
It was at the start of what would have been the 11th pass that disaster struck pern once more. A large meteorite collided with the red star, the resulting explosion was visible on pern as it lit up the sky and shook the ground. It resulted in natural disasters like sudden volcanic eruptions and huge tidal waves. The dragonriders were doing their best to save who they could, but many people died that week as the dragons were just too few.
But the worst of it came a week later, when the debris entered perns atmosphere and the already exhausted riders had to deflect it. Many riders died, many small meteor managed to get through the shield of their wings and then…then there was thread. After 400 turns of absence it was back with a vengeance, raining down on the poor exhausted riders, killing all fighting dragons in a single fall. The collision with the meteor had knocked the red star back into its former orbid, its mocking red light, framed by the eyerocks of the old northern weyrs.
The only weyr left standing was Skyguard, whose queen was on the hatchingsands, guarding her clutch. Besides her, there were an injured brown, 3 blues and 4 green. But there were 14 eggs on the sands and they carried the hope off all of pern. Unable to defend the entire continent with just 8 fighting dragons, the holders that had survived were all gathered in the weyr so that the dragons only had to protect the area around it.
So with just 8 fighting dragons and a bunch of displeased lord holders having to depend on the dragonriders once more, how will Skyguard cope? Will Thread finaly destroy all life on pern or will the pernese find a way to survive disaster once more?
