I don't want to.
Such as always Axeth's answer when Ketara asked him to fly her down to Danac Hold, to trade and sell furs. Today's load was Axeth's meal from the past sevenday- five herdbeast hides. They weren't tanned, not yet, but Ketara couldn't stand to have the things in her weyr anymore. They were big, and bulky, and worst of all, they smelled funny.
"You always whine. Come on. We'll go down, and do a little bit of trading, and you, laddy-buck, can laze in the summer sun before taking me home again!"
I am not a pack animal. Go get that beast herder to take them down.
"She's already ticked enough that I have to skin the critters before you'll eat them, and I don't want anyone else mad at us!"
No one is ever mad at me. You, however, I am not surprised. Who is mad at you?
"I don't think K'met's too thrilled about having me as his assistant. I mean, he just got done training me as a weyrling! Now he's got to deal with me, and a bunch of wet-behind-the-ears weyrlings!"
Axeth examined his claws, and flexed his wing before replying.
You're right. He hates you. I'm not doing it.
"AXETH!!!"
_~_
I hate you.
They were flying high above the land, flying straight because Axeth was too grumpy to take the proper coordinates. Ketara smiled, resting her palm against his warm neck.
"You don't mean it, Ax. You never do."
She was right, naturally, which just made the blue grumble even more. He kept up a steady rumbling protest all the way, even after landing a dragonlength away from the bazaar.
"Oh, cheer up, Ax. Go sit in the sun for a bit."
Yeah, yeah.
He took off again after Ketara dismounted and untied the bundle of hides. She was left to carry the bulky armful to the Leather Shoppe.
"Hello? Is anyone here?" she asked around her burden. She set the hides down on the clean-swept floor, and stretched. Her muscles had started to kink.

((Takes on Role of Shopkeep))
" Yes, yes....coming!" Jindin coughed as some dust clouded up into his way. " How may I help you? Come to buy or to trade lass?"
Jindin was almost blind...so really being the Shopkeep was the best job for him. Better keeping the shop than losing finger at leather cutting or some other work.
He cared nothing for rank either...all as well, he couldn't see knots.

Ah, how she loved the smells in the leather shop! Finely crafted leathers gave off a good smell, one that calmed her frazzled nerves. And lately, that's all she seemed to have, frazzled nerves. Axeth was gettnig increasingly demanding, and that was spilling over into her job.
"Today, I come to trade, Master Jinden."
She indicated the pile of hides, knowing full well that the shopkeeper couldn't see very well.

" It's just Jindin girl." The keeper mumbled as he leaned in rather close to look at the skins.
" Trade is it? Well...very good...at least someone wants to take something from this smelly old shoppe!" Jindin turned around and sneezed, thankfully away from Ketara.
" What are you in need of?"

"I've called you Master Jinden since the day I came to this shop, Master Jinden," the blue rider reminded the aging shopkeep.
"I've brought some herdbeast leather, unfortunately green-tanned. And I'm in need of a new helmet. I seem to have...misplaced...mine."
Misplaced mothing! She'd had it under her arm as they came out of between after the last Fall, and Axeth had to do some cool trick that involved looping. She, startled, had dropped the helmet into the river. Now, she really didn't want to go looking for it.

Jindin's face lit up as he finally figured out who it was. " Well I'll be...Ketara! It's been a while girl. My eyes have gotten even worse deary...I can't believe that the owners still trust me in here."
Jindin gave Ketara a very rare grin. " Pick out your helmet then girl. It doesn't matter that these hides are a little green. Tell that wherry of a dragon to stay off your back."
He laid the hides on a table for later and leaned against a counter, waiting for Ketara to finish up.

"Thanks, Master Jinden. I will, don't you worry."
Ketara returned the shopkeep's grin with a happy smile, comfortable around the old man. She chuckled appreciatively at the thought of tranferring his scolding to the irritable blue.
Still chuckling, she moved to look over the stock of riding helmets. There were only a few in her size, which was larger than her head appeared, because she braided her hair to fit under it. One caught her eye, with little iron mouldings around the rim that would frame her face. They apparently covered stitches, because the inside was lined with soft fur.
I rather like it...but the fur'll get absoluetly disgusting by the end of Fall...but that- is that a dragon in those mouldings? How interesting...
She picked it up, and ran her fingers through the fur. Just as soft as it had looked, she then felt the mouldings. To her surprise, a section fell away to reveal that it was hinged, and a section of fur drooped! So the liner was washable...that was convenient!
She turned to Master Jinden, and held out the helmet.
"What do you think of this, Master Jinden?" she asked, walking back to the old shopkeep.

Jindin looked up at his name. He walked over to the helmet and took it.
" Hrmmm...Let's see. It's a fine helmet Ketara, just don't forget to wash that fur. It can mold, and dry it too." Jindin gave her a little smile and returned the helmet.
" Is that the one you want?"

"Yes, please, Master Jinden. How much do I owe you?"
She thought the hides would cover it, but it never hurt to be sure...eventually, she would go over her credit here.
At least she'd just been paid...

Jindin looked from the helmet to the girl. He couldn't see well...but he could still look as though he had enough sight to see Ketara this close.
" Nothing Ketara, these hides are enough to cover a helmet. Now get on girl, I'm sure you have work to do!" Jindin winked and smiled at the Blue rider.

"Thank you, Master Jinden!"
The blue rider giggled, and added, "K'met's probably looking for me. I'll be back soon, okay?"
Ketara made sure to lodge the new helmet firmly under her arm as she left the shop. Before she went back to Axeth, she wanted to check out a few more shops...
