Tan wings furled as Apolloth split the herd, selecting his beast quickly.
B'can was glad that he lacked Nayarath's tendency to play with her food. She would run weight off the beasts, the stocky tanrider thought, not entirely without irritation.
Part of him wished Inolyn would show up. Since the Hatching feast, he had come to appreciate the violetrider's company more and more. They made a good working pair, too...of course, Jorindath would never be senior, being a violet, but...the partnership worked.
Apolloth might aspire to more. B'can was hoping Jorindath would keep chosing the tan as her mate...keep them in this balance. And hoping that if she did not, Inolyn would still come back to him.
Nayarath would fly next, he thought. "I hate to say it, Apolloth, but I hope you don't catch her."
The tan, fortunately, ignored him.

Since the hatching Inolyn hadn't felt so free! To be confinded to the Weyr for a few months, to fly again was the best feeling ever. Any excuse at all and Jorindath and Inolyn were gone, whether it be for an hour or the whole day. It was like graduation all over again...
Jori wasn't hungry but the violet had taken up a perch above the hatching grounds, too far up to be of much concern to the food below. Egg laying had suited the young queen, it had certainly added a refined sence of maturity to her. It would be months yet till she rose again, and in the mean time was taking less notice of the boys.
"Or we'll never here the end of it." Inolyn spoke up from behind B'can, completed thier personal joke at the tan. Jori had told her Apolloth was on the feeding grounds and Inolyn had wanted to surprise the tanrider. Closing the gap between them she placed an affectionate kiss on B'can's cheek. The whole Weyr thought they made a good pair, if only it hadn't taken so long for them to see how far it would take them.

B'can actually jumped a bit as Inolyn sneaked up behind him...and even stole a kiss. He slipped the closest of his arms around her.
"Apolloth still wants to be Weyrleader. I think he always will. But the two of them look good together, don't they." Not that that meant anything. Dragons, even queens, could be flighty creatures. Only a minority of females kept the same mate from flight to flight.
Still, Jorindath was a fine figure of a queen, smaller than a gold, but also more refined. More...elegant, somehow. "So, yes...but then, I didn't hear the end of it for the entire time from flight to clutching. And even now, if he gets reminded he sired those weyrlings, he has to tell me they're the finest young dragons Pern has ever seen."
As long as nobody blamed the tan for the female-ridden bronze.
