Name: N’lel
Age: 17 Turns
Rank: Charcoal Rider
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Bisexual
Appearance: The most obvious aspects of him being hair and eyes. He has slightly curly light brown hair. The curls are more wisps than anything, and it is really quite simply for him to have his hair straight, or at least mostly straight. His eyes are light blue, a bit darker than, say, the color of the sky in the afternoon. The rest of his appearance his pretty much average. He has a few freckles on his face, but not too many, and a scar on his left arm that he acquired during the first hatching that he attended. He is also a bit taller than other boys his age, not so much that he stands out a great deal in a crowd, but enough that he can see over the heads of other people without having to strain himself too much. He is naturally taller, and it doesn’t bother him too much. It isn’t a very noticeable thing anyhow.
For the most part, he doesn’t care too much about what he is wearing. He prefers leather shoes to sandals, and only wears sandals when it is a requirement. Clothes, however, are not a big issue for him. Color doesn’t matter. Popularity doesn’t matter. He just wants something that fits him and is relatively comfortable. While he doesn’t want to wear clothing that would give people a negative opinion of him, he also doesn’t want to wear something just because it might make him look cool or something, because he doesn’t really believe what you wear should be the decider on whether or not you are a cool person.
Personality: One mistake people can make about N’lel is believing that he is shy. This isn’t really the case. True, he can be a little hard to open up at times, but it doesn’t really make him that shy. He is more observant than anything else. He prefers to watch a scene than take part in it, and will sit on the sidelines quite happily while everyone else does something. He doesn’t enjoy getting into the midst of a lot of action, and prefers to just keep to himself and let everyone else do whatever they would like to do. He is definitely not a leader-type. He is not truly shy, either, even if he can seem that way.
He tends to keep his emotions to himself. N’lel is good at hiding how he feels, and could pull off a wonderful poker face if he ever wanted to take a stab at gambling. He is simply the kind of person who keeps how he is feeling to himself. It isn’t really something he does on purpose, it is simply the way he is. And N’lel likes it that way, and would prefer to keep it that way. He doesn’t enjoy having people try to get him to open up. He is as open as he feels like being, and that should be enough for everyone else.
Another thing about him is that he tends to be good at reading the emotions of others. Perhaps it is because all he ever really does is sit and watch. Now, other people actually need to be showing emotion for this, of course. If he were to run into himself he would have a hard time guessing at what he was thinking by just looking at himself. But he can read body language and facial expressions and use it to assume what mood another person is in, and he is usually right when he guesses. This helps him to be very considerate about how other people are feeling, and even if he doesn’t always talk a lot, if he wanted to try and comfort someone he could probably find the right way to go about doing it.
Despite his preference for shyness, N’lel doesn’t really enjoy being alone alone. By himself, sure, but with other people nearby. Being by himself is something that he has always feared for some reason. Now that he has Hearth, it is easier for him to be with someone else, but he does prefer being with a few people around to being all by himself. N’lel does not crave that kind of alone time that other people might. He will spend time alone with just Hearth, certainly, but it isn’t always a frequent thing. More of a Hearth-wants-to-get-away-from-everyone kind of thing.
His memory is not the best. Tell him something, and he may forget it an hour later. If it’s really important, he might remember for a day or two. Some might say he has the memory of a dragon. Perhaps this is true. But whatever it is, N’lel’s short-term memory is horribly short. His long-term is just fine, but getting something into his long-term memory is... difficult. Hopefully he will never have to do anything that requires a lot of memorization, because he would fail promptly.
N’lel tends to be rather patient. Some people just want things to happen, but he doesn’t really mind if things take a while to get happening. Changes aren’t always a good thing; sometimes bad things can happen as well, so he is never in any rush for things to happen. He doesn’t mind when things do happen (usually) but he is not impatient for anything, really. The only thing he ever was impatient for was dragon hatchings, and since he is already a rider those are no longer an issue either. Everything happens at its own pace, after all.
History: Like many other people, Nalel was born in the Weyr. He grew up in the Weyr crèche, his parents being too busy too look after him usually. Everyone could be his family, so this was not a particular issue. From the start, though, Nalel knew that he wanted to be a dragonrider. What greater thing could there be to do? He was too young to be a Candidate when he came to this decision, and so was forced to wait patiently until he was old enough. This took far longer than he thought it would, but he waited anyways.
The day finally came when he was old enough to be a Candidate. Nalel happily took his place on the sands, waiting, hoping that one of the hatching dragons would choose him. A dragon did indeed walk up to him, but it did not choose him. Instead, it caused him to trip, slashed his arm (leaving a rather permanent scar) and clambered over him to someone else.
Nalel was heartbroken for a while, but he knew there would be other hatchings soon enough. He was more apprehensive, however. He’d already been hurt once, and he didn’t want it to happen again. So it was with apprehensive that he waited through other hatchings, being quite unwilling to go too near the dragons. He’d let one close before, and it had simply run him over. He wanted to Impress, certainly, but he didn’t want to be injured again.
Finally, however, the day did come when he Impressed. Nalel certainly didn’t know what dragon he expected to Impress, but it certainly wasn’t the one that he did. An odd black-and-red dragon, the likes of which he had never seen before. This creature had sauntered up and chosen him. And he hadn’t been hurt or anything. It was quite wonderful for him, really, since it meant he wouldn’t have to stand for anymore hatchings. Now he could watch from the safety of the stands.
Weyrlinghood seemed to go by quickly enough for N’lel and Hearth. It was a time for learning, although N’lel had some trouble keeping some things in mind. He can only hope Hearth can remind him of the really important things, although he doubts Hearth’s memory is any better than his own. Now that they have graduated, they are simply living the lives of any dragonrider. While Hearth may be an odder color, he isn’t that much different from any other dragon. Just a grumpier and more pessimistic one. Why Hearth choose him, N’lel does not know, but he doesn’t really regret it.
Pets: Brown Firelizard Dare (might do description later)
Other: Can’t think of anything
-If a Rider:
Dragon Name: Hearth
Dragon Age: 2 Turns
Dragon Color: Charcoal
Appearance: Hearth’s hide is more of a very dark, ashy gray than the gray-black most Charcoal’s sport. His ember marks are also lighter than average, and line the edge of his jaw and the ridges along his back rather than totally keeping to the usual place for these markings. Hearth’s build is lighter too, a bit more agile and delicate looking than most of his color. Small, Hearth is only barely 25 meters in length, a somewhat embarrassing size since larger Greens can outsize him.
Dragon Personality: Hearth is a surprisingly cooperative Charcoal, but past that he keeps up their usual personality: pessimistic and grumbly. He can come up with a complaint for even the best of things; he could probably even win a Flight and have something bad to say about it. His small body is overflowing with ‘bad vibes’, and although Hearth is much smaller than most of his kind, his sour personality does more than enough to make up for it.
