Name: Fiona
Age: 20 Turns
Rank: Harper-Journeyman
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Appearance: Fiona has short, cropped dark brown hair that falls half-way down her neck. Lighter brown, almost blonde streaks shimmer through her dark hair. It’s cropped short because she doesn’t like the wind to whip it in her face when she’s in the weyr. Her clothes are simple, always a deep Harper blue like custom in the Harper Hall dictates. Her weyrhide boots are dyed a deep blue, and she always wears a Harper blue tunic with a deep purple belt cinched around her waist. Her pants are normally always black, and not-quite skin tight to make running easy.
She has pale skin, despite being out in the sun often, and she always smells like the sweetest flowers found on Pern, thanks to a friend at the Harper Hall. Her eyes are a light, smoky grey-green with an almost white haze over them. Fiona, ever since she was born, has been blind. Fiona stands at five foot seven, tall for a girl but not lanky in any way. She is filled out well, with an average sized bust and hips just wide enough to bear children with no problem, but not so big that she looks un-proportioned.
Personality: Fiona, despite being blind, is very outgoing and will even participate in races. She loves being outdoors, though not many would know it because of her pale skin. Fiona is a very happy person, almost always smiling even when she was angry. She was always solving disputes at the Harper Hall with her quick thinking, which quickly got her into good graces with most of the Masters and Journeymen. Fiona has a very sharp tongue to match her short temper, although she has learned from many years of training to keep her temper under control, and smile even when she is angry.
History: Fiona’s mother died during childbirth, and while Fiona was in the womb, something had happened that had caused her eyesight to fail. Her father was so proud to finally have a girl until he realized hours later that she was blind. But when Fiona first opened her eyes and he saw their color, he decided that she was indeed a miracle, having her mothers beautiful eyes. Her father named her Fiona, after her now-dead mother and cherished her, giving young Fiona anything and everything she wished.
When Fiona was seven, she found the Harper class room. Since her father ran a small holding, they didn’t have a Harper until a week before and he had not gotten around to teaching until then. Since Fiona was blind, her father didn’t think she would be able to learn the Teaching Ballads or be able to play an instrument. But when the Harper saw her, he realized who she was and told her to come in. “I can teach you child, if you wish,” He said after the class had left. He pressed his finger to her lips and grabbed her small hand, putting it on his mouth to show he was smiling at her. “It will be our secret.” Fiona had quickly agreed. She wanted nothing more than to be able to play like she heard him playing.
For four years, the Harper taught Fiona and surprised him by how quickly she caught on, causing her to have to explain to him. “I can hear things most cannot,” She had told him. “Since I can’t see.” He had smiled and nodded. Somehow he had found out she knew when he was nodding or shaking his head, and she told him she could hear the smile in his voice when he spoke to her.
When she was old enough, the Harper had sent a message to the Masterharper and he had told him to send Fiona to the Harper Hall as soon as possible. Her father was ecstatic, thinking his daughter wouldn’t be able to do anything because of her blindness. “Make me proud honey,” He had said to her when she left, tears in her eyes. She had climbed on the large bronze dragon behind her Harper teacher and waved at the spot she knew her father would be standing in. And that was when Fiona first heard a dragon speak… One of the riders she had spoken too once had told her that the dragons will speak to anyone they want to talk to. She was still very shocked, but she never told anyone, save for her father, about her rare gift.
While at the Harper Hall, Fiona got the brunt of most attention… And not all of it good. Because she was a girl, and because she was blind, most of the other apprentices would pick on her and play tricks on her. She was better at playing instruments than most of them, and all of them hated her for it. However they didn’t realize that Fiona could hear them from a long distance off, and she would after awhile end up twisting their tricks around on themselves.
One day out of the blue, her father sent her a package via dragon rider. It was the same man who had transported her to the Harper Hall a year before and he smiled happily as he clapped her gently on the back, thrusting a package into her arms. “What is it?” She had asked him.
“It’s a fire-lizard egg of course!” M’tall said, grinning broadly. “Your father traded a hefty sum for it and wanted you to have it! Quickly, get the egg to the hearth! The egg needs to stay warm!” M’tall, rider of bronze Latoth, pushed her gently inside the hall and followed her almost protectively to the kitchen so she could get the egg on the hearth. When the one brown little dragonets hatched, and Fiona had impressed him, the bullying by her peers became worse but her fire-lizard became her guard, fighting the other apprentices off before they could do her any serious harm. After three years of being an apprentice, Fiona walked the tables and became a Journeyman, and was sent off to Nyocia Weyr only three years later. There she obtained a barred fire-lizard egg six months ago and she was more than ecstatic. She found out that her beautiful fire lizards would send her pictures of different things, and once she was shocked that they sent her one of herself.
“Oh my lovelies! Oh thank you!” She had said and had broken down into tears of happiness, sending the two into wild acrobatics about her head, screeching and crooning to her to calm her again.
Pets: Two fire-lizards given to her by her father. A barred only six months old, named Halla, and a brown, named Valla.
Other: Fiona has the ability to speak to dragons. She always chalked it up to the fact that since she was blind, she was able to hear things most people couldn’t. She had always wanted to be a dragon rider, but she knew because of her disability she couldn’t. But when she found she could become a Harper, she jumped more than gladly at the chance. The dragons speak to her, and like the fire-lizards they enjoy sending her pictures of various things. To Fiona, being blind is a wonderful thing if it leads the magnificent beasts to speak with her and send her mental pictures.
