Truth was, B'can did not really know what he was doing. Only why he was doing it.
He knew that Inolyn and Jorindath were at the feeding grounds, and would not be back until the violet was sated. The queen ate more than Apolloth did.
Which gave him a bit of time. He had set out the food he had wheedled out of the cooks. In the center of the table was a rose carved out of wood, painted exquisitely. A flower that, of course, would not fade.
The place needed that kind of a brightening touch. But what B'can was trying...was to actually be a good weyrmate. Romance had never been his strong point and the early uncertainty of their relationship, with his crush on Brylorea hanging between them...no, that had not helped.
When would she be back? Soon, he thought...

"last one, Jori." Inolyn spoke to her dragon, the violet queen settling down with her forth kill. Jorindath was expecting to rise to mate within in a few sevendays, something that they all knew but Inolyn felt like an itch. Anyway, a fat dragon wont fly far or fast so the queen was limited to four... or maybe she needed the energy of the fifth? Best not the let her over eat anyway.
I wont get fat
"You wont get me to budge. One more and and you'll be fit to burst." The violet didn't reply, intently munching away. Well, more tearing and crunching. For a queen she didn't eat very neatly, Inolyn having to stand clear to avoid being splattered with blood and gore. Under the purple there had to be green. Lost in thought the woman, back turned, there was no way she would have seen Jori till it was too late. A blood covered muzzle prodded her side, knocking her over.
You worry too much about getting dirty, it washes off
An investigating hand found her side smeared with blood. Is she let it set in it would stain, and weyrwoman or not the head woman would talk her ear off for it. It wasn't the first vest Jorindath had ruined for some reason or another. Normally something as small as not liking the color. Jumping up onto her dragons back the rider shouted, "To the lake! Now!!!"
Left at the water's edge, Inolyn set to work washing her tunic while the violet splashed. I don't want to see one smudge of red
Why not swim too?
"It's too co-ARGH!!!" Inolyn screamed as she was drenched in cold water. The cool air wafting on a light breeze did nothing to help her warm up. Jori just rumbled in laughter, That's enough fun and games. Better not stay in those wet clothes or you'll catch a chill Inolyn only grumbled but couldn't agree more, wondering just what had got into her dragon.
Standing on the ledge, she tried wringing out as much moisture she could before before entering her weyr. Wouldn't do to drip everywhere and on everything. The last thing she expected was B'can setting out a table with a nicely prepared meal.
"Oh..."

B'can was not going to laugh. What had happened was pretty much written all over Inolyn's appearance. Who to blame was clear.
Evenly. "I think your dragon...has a bit too much of a sense of humor today."
Apolloth would never do anything like that, of course...the tan was far too vain and expected his rider to always be in perfect condition. If HE sprayed B'can it would be because he thought he needed a bath...well. Inolyn DID need a bath, and fortunately, this being the weyr of a violet and tan rider, they had such facilities without having to go down to the lower caverns.
Except that by then the food would be cold. NOt sure quite what to do, the stocky tanrider just kind of stood there.
"Umm."
Yeah.
This was a spanner in his works. Well. Dragons would be dragons and even queens often lacked, well...dignity. Yeah. That was it.
Jorindath had no dignity.

Inolyn threw her hands up in surender. "I'll just clean myself up and change. I wont let this go to waste."
Slipping past B'can she grabbed some clean clothes before disappearing behind the curtain to the bathing room. Unfortunately she had to take a bath if she wanted to get the dirt off her skin, relentless scrubbing to make short work of it. Her hair could not be helped, washing out her long brown tresses. It wouldn't dry quickly no mater how hard she tried, damp would have to do as she tied it back into a runners tail with a ribbon.
Finally reappearing a lot more presentable, Inolyn kissed the tanrider's cheek. "I think she knew what you were planning. She must of think she was helping by forcing me to be on time for you."

"Apolloth probably blew my cover," B'can confessed, glancing at the tan shape pretending to be asleep on the ledge. He knew the dragon was pretending. Likely, so did Jorindath.
Damp hair or no, she was beautiful, and he let that knowledge show in his eyes. "I should have planned better. I thought..."
Not good at being romantic, no. And right now he did wonder what he had done to deserve this woman. Oh yeah. Apolloth flew Jorindath. And soon Jorindath would rise again and he might well lose her. Perhaps that was part of this.
Heck, it was...a mixed motivation of appreciating her while he had her and hoping that perhaps he could, by being exceptionally nice to Inolyn, somehow influence Jorindath's choice. Rider and dragon were not *that* separate, surely?

"No, it's not your fault. You didn't tell Jorindath to dunk me in the lake, and it wouldn't be the same if it wasn't a surprise." And it certainly was a surprise. B'can wasn't known to be spontainious, that he had gone to the effort just for her mean a lot. Despite her being unprepared, the romantic jesture was not lost on her. Jorindath would pay for prank, or did she not like B'can?
He was fretting about when you would return. Would you want to miss this?
You could have thought of another way! And ruin the surprise? There was no arguing with her. "So B'can what do we have here?" Entwining her fingers in his.

"You mentioned you particularly liked how Elva prepares roast herdbeast, so I bribed her into doing some for us."
He didn't mention what with...but bribing cooks was a time honored Weyr tradition. B'can would not be surprised if Kora occasionally engaged in it.
"And like Apolloth's never dunked me. Well, not so much now. He has too much dignity to play very often."
Apolloth lifted his head, then sidled along the ledge closer to Jorindath. Mmm. Warm queen dragon. B'can glanced over at the two.
"At least it's good sunning weather for them." Something all dragons appreciated. They liked nothing better from what he could tell.

Inolyn's eyes lit up as bright as a glows on the wall. "Elva's roast?! why didn't you say so!" Elva was a genius with herbs and spices, but a speacial favor wouldn't come cheap. She wasn't going to ask what he had to do, but more then likely it was something laboring and/or mucky. Wasting no more time the violet rider slid into a chair, slicing off a small piece of meat to taste. It was perfect! Not too hot, the meat melting on her tongue and the smell was enough to make her stomach start grumbling for more.
"I don't think i tell you that I love you enough, B'can"
Jorindath slid over to meet her favorite tan, her tail entwining with his. Maybe a bath was just what she needed, Apolloth bearly came near her if she was covered in mud or blood. Inolyn looked over when B'can mentioned their dragons. "Maybe, but while the sun may shine it wont be warm for long. It'll be winter soon."
Don't might us, you two are busy
"And Jori says we should ignore them since we've a nice meal to enjoy"

"I *know* I don't tell you often enough," B'can noted. He was not the most demonstrative of weyrmates...but loyal, and it was perhaps with reason that Apolloth had chased seldom and not won since he had claimed Jorindath.
He glanced at the dragons again, and was reassured by what he saw. There was a good chance, if they were still affectionate now, that Apolloth had won a special place in Jorindath's heart.
He laughed a bit at the comment about Jorindath. "She's probably right." His eyes met hers. He knew that were they holdfolk, he would have long since asked her to marry him. Riders, of course, did not wed. Their relationships were often unstable, caught on the waves of dragon instinct and whim. Yet some gold-bronze pairs had, it was rumored, stayed together for decades. And after so thoroughly losing Nayarath...Apolloth seemed far more content with his violet.

"Is there something on your mind? You can't hide it from me, something's worrying you..." Inolyn knew that look in his eyes that he must have been trying to hide from his face, she knew her weyrmate better then he might think. The romantic meal in front of her now seemed to grow suspicious and her appitite was falling.
Tearing her eyes from his she looked back at their dragons, the object of his attentions. Nothing appeared out of the ordinary, but could make B'can worry? They both knew Jorindath would rise again soon even if they didn't speak of it to each other. "If you're worried about Jori then don't be. Looking at them makes it clear that she doesn't have another favored. Even if she chooses another it doesn't matter, I chose you!"

B'can smiled. "I admit, I was a bit worried..." He lets out a breath. "Inolyn, you're the first woman I've had a serious relationship with, the first I've shared quarters with. I might be a tan rider, but sometimes I think there is one thing I'm afraid of, and that's the same thing I love."
He let out a breath. "I'm sorry." He knew she was on edge, he could tell with the long practice of those who shared a weyr. But she had said she chose him, that she would stay with him even if...and he would stay with her as long as she wanted him. Heck, even if there was a kid and questionable fatherhood...he would stay.

Inolyn let herself relax, so it was only that. She knew some riders got a little on edge when certain dragons were ready to rise, but B'can was only worried about her. Shador had not kept men around long, and Kora had not kept D'mas when L'han had risen to Wyerleader. Inolyn's feelings were longer lasting then that, and she as a person would have no man but the one she loved in her bed.
"It's alright, I understand. You just make sure Apolloth is ready when the its time."
It won't be easy, I have to make sure you're still strong enough to be my mate Jorindath murmured to the tan. As much as enjoyed Apolloth's flattery and attention only a strong male would sire her eggs.

B'can grinned. "Apolloth was trying to volunteer us for longer sweeps so he'll be in top shape. Silly tan."
Not that he objected, really. And he often did get a longer route, the tan's stamina being only marginally less than a bronze's.
And the only female Apolloth had chased lately was Nayarath, and no bronze could be expected to resist the senior queen. That was the way things were...the senior controlled the dragons and her call was beyond even instinct and into something B'can did not fully understand. Of course, Apolloth had the advantage of having sired a good clutch before, even if the bronze had gone and picked a woman...maybe Apolloth's offspring were just a little bit, well, odd.
Maybe.

Inolyn giggled, "I don't think there's been anyone to volenteer for longer sweeps. Its normally given as a punishment." Being a queenrider meant that apart from her weyrling training, she had never really had to preform a sweep in all her days as a Rider. From what she had heard however was that they were boring and repetitive. Unless something major had happened to the region, such as forest fires or landslides, it was pretty much the same sights every day as it changed with the seasons. It didn't appeal to Inolyn, who would probably lose her concentration at the first destraction.
The food infront of her was too much of a destraction right now as it was. There was food still sitting in front of her, food B'can had gone through so much effort to prepare for her and despite her want to not let it go to waste it seemed it would. Left any longer and Keloc and Leaf would appear to devour it all. They must be outside with Nip, the roan kagan now quite a size. "I'm sorry B'can, that your plan didn't go as well as it should have..."

B'can smiled. "To be honest, your company is worth whatever it might take and I don't care if plans go awry."
They tended to, he had noticed, when dragons were involved. Especially, it seemed, queens. He had always been glad he could not Impress one, but there were days when being weyrmated to a queenrider was close enough. But he wouldn't trade it for anything.
He wasn't sure what kind of woman he would have ended up with had he not been Searched...but nothing like Inolyn, he was sure of it. He wouldn't have had the courage to court a woman like her without Apolloth.
