Name: Tessarah (but you will call her Tessa. She’ll tell people her full name, but it’s always accompanied with “call me Tessa”)
Age: 21 Turns
Rank: Candidate
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Heterosexual, but way to lazy to get into a relationship of any kind
Appearance: On the taller side of women, Tessarah can be quite imposing if she wants to be. She’s overweight, and has indeed been so since childhood. It doesn’t really bother her much, because that’s just who she is, and not everyone can have a perfectly slim figure. Besides, she isn’t as overweight as she could be. No one can just say she is “chubby” but she doesn’t weigh a hundred pounds over what she should either. Around somewhere in the middle of all that. Her hair is a mild brown color, not really dark but not really light either, and mostly all the same color brown throughout, since she doesn’t really have natural highlights or anything. It goes down below her shoulders, but not to much, and if it gets in her way Tessarah will tie it back. She never really bothers to do something elaborate with her hair though, since there isn’t really any need to anyway.
While not completely ugly, Tessarah isn’t exactly overly attractive either, and if she lost a few dozen pounds she would still not be the woman all the guys keep looking at. She just isn’t beautiful; she never has been and never will. No one in her immediate family is either. Once again, it doesn’t really bother her. Part of that may be because she’s to lazy to care, but most of it is because she’s smart enough to know that regretting one’s physical appearance is just a waste of time, and Tessarah prefers to waste time in different ways, not fretting over things. That is way to stressful for her. Besides, Tessarah is great at not worrying about things. So yes, she’s not beautiful, or even pretty, but it doesn’t bother her much either.
Tessarah’s weight isn’t all fat. Some of it actually muscle, mostly from when she was forced to help out back home. Now that she’s at the Weyr she may end up losing of that muscle, but for now she does have the strength to do admirably well in building. It still isn’t her favorite thing to do, and she still doesn’t jump up to help with some task, but she could help, and that counts for something, even if it really isn’t that much.
Personality: The most obvious thing about Tessarah is that she’s lazy. Not in the sleep-in kind of way, but the procastine-all-things-that-need-to-be-done-until-the-last-moment-and-then-do-it-grudgingly kind of way. Whenever she’s been given chores to do, Tessarah has never done them at that moment, and always managed to put it off until it simply couldn’t be put off. She still does that, actually, but it’s harder to get away with when you’re an adult and supposed to be more responsible than as a child. Tessarah doesn’t feel any more responsible just because she’s older. She still hates having to put effort into doing things. Why not let the people that want to work do the work? The best description of her is an intelligent person with no motivation.
Tessarah may be lazy, but she’s not dumb. She’s actually quite intelligent, but she prefers to tell others the solution and let them do the actual doing rather than doing it herself. She’s an expert at giving advice, but not so much as acting on it. Tessarah doesn’t automatically pass off as intelligent, but she is patient and an expert listener. She’s good at listening to someone spew out their problems. Sometimes she can think of a solution, and sometimes she can simply offer sympathy. If it really moves her, she might even be willing to (*gasp*) act on it. If she really wanted to, Tessarah could talk to people and get them to listen. That’s a lot of effort though, and why should she bother?
Like any sensible person, Tessarah is not a fan of work. Most people are more sensible than her about it though. She’ll never be caught jumping forward eagerly at the chance to help build some wall or repair a house or anything. An expert at procrastinating, Tessarah always seems to know just how long she can put something off, and then get it done right before she’d get in trouble for not doing it. She always does manage to get the things she needs to do done, although she still enjoys just lying back and letting things happen. “The future” is not an overly big concept for her. Important duties, or anything that actually matters to her, she can remember, but most things she’ll let slip by. Tessarah isn’t much of an accomplisher.
Dragons? Oh, yes, that is what she’s at the Weyr for, isn’t it? Tessarah can’t imagine it will make much of a difference if she’s anxious or not. If there’s a hatching, she’ll stand, but she won’t stand there fretting over the possible results. It’s not like anything will change if she doesn’t Impress. She could still stay at the Weyr, and perhaps she’d get to stand at another hatching at some later date, so why stress? For that reasoning, Tessarah has simply been enjoying her time at the Weyr, sometimes forgetting that she’s even a Candidate. There are so many better things to do than stress over dragons. To herself, she does think that she would like a dragon, but she isn’t going to be seriously vexed if she is never Chosen.
It might seem that someone so ridiculously lazy shouldn’t be very likely to become a Candidate, considering what they prepare for. Tessarah wasn’t chosen to be a Candidate because she was young, pretty, and had an active lifestyle. She was chosen because she was intelligent, quiet, patient, and with another plan in mind if she didn’t Impress. Her best qualities are ones you wouldn’t see right away. At first glance, she just seems like someone useless at getting anything done. True, she isn’t reliable on getting things done herself, but she has the logic and persuasion necessary to get other people to do things (not that most people will automatically listen to someone like her). At home, she managed to get things done without lifting a finger simply by getting her siblings to first listen to her, and then agree with her.
It has probably become apparent by now that Tessarah doesn’t stress over things. This can be a good thing, since stress is not always healthy, but she doesn’t stress so much that it can’t really be considered a good thing. There is nothing Tessarah can think of that would keep her constantly worrying, because she simply doesn’t have a problem with letting things just slip by. She certainly isn’t the only person to prefer just hanging out to actually changing things around. Tessarah doesn’t tend to complain about things, but she doesn’t go to lengths to change anything either.
History: Born in a cothold on the Southern continent, Tessarah was just as much a nobody as the rest of her family. That never bothered her though, because not everybody can be a somebody, or there would be no nobodies, and as such, no somebodies either. She had three older siblings, and by the time she was ten, three younger siblings as well. That’s getting a bit ahead though. Tessarah spent most of her younger Turns (before she was ten) staying exclusively at home and not going much of elsewhere. She had several good friends she would play with, along with her siblings occasionally. Her elder siblings told her stories about dragons and how they would come out of the sky and eat her if she misbehaved, but Tessarah didn’t believe them; she was quite adamant that dragons didn’t exist. As a young child, she preferred to believe only those things which she could see. As such, she didn’t believe in felines until she saw one either.
Tessarah saw a dragon for the first time when she was eight. She had looked up at the clouds and thought she saw a dark shape that didn’t quite fit in with everything else. It vanished soon afterwards. She couldn’t be quite positive it was a dragon, after all, it could have just been a bird. Still, she was inclined to believe that it had been a dragon, because that way she could tell everyone she had seen one. That was when she decided dragons were real, although she still didn’t really believe they would eat her if she misbehaved. She was always careful just in case, though.
When she was around fifteen Turns she started getting the care of her younger siblings left to her. This was for several, including her parents being busy and Tessarah having a relatively pleasant temperament. Usually she would just sit down and make sure they didn’t do anything unruly, which tended to work out perfectly well for her. She proved to do very well watching young children, but never really wanted any of her own, since that brought around a responsibility that she didn’t need to watch her young siblings and their friends. Still, she managed to find something to gain experience in while growing up in a cothold. She was used to people taking of themselves and each other, and was glad to think she had a way to help out in all of that. Most of her time was devoted to just staying at home. She never really went for those youthful walks so many other young people seem to enjoy. She preferred staying safe, not for the safety itself, but just so she never had far to walk to get anywhere. Still, if she could have found a place where she could hide to get out of chores, she would have done it.
Upon reaching her sixteenth Turn, her life took, what was for her, an unpleasant turn. It was around that age when everyone seemed to unanimously decide she was old enough to be more helpful in the workings of the cothold. This involved much more strenuous work than Tessarah enjoyed. She helped out because she had too, but it still irked her. Unfortunately for her, she was to lazy to try and hide and thus get away from work. Tessarah simply didn’t have the motivation necessary to try and get out of it. Certainly she didn’t prefer the work, but she was too lazy to avoid it, so she ended up stuck with helping out.
Tessarah spent several Turns like this. It was some time after that before she saw a dragon up close. It was more than one dragon, actually, and they said that they had come on Search. Tessarah wasn’t entirely sure what that meant, but she knew it had something to do with dragons. When they asked her if she wanted to Stand at the hatching, Tessarah said yes the moment she realized it meant she was going to a Weyr. Becoming a rider wasn’t her prime goal (although it did sound appealing), she mostly just wanted to get away from all that working. If she’d known all the work being a Candidate entailed, she probably wouldn’t have gone, but by the time she did know it was too late. Tessarah plans to be a Candidate until she is to old to Impress (or does Impress), and if she doesn’t Impress, she can stay at the Weyr and work in the Lower Caverns. Tessarah didn’t come without a plan in mind.
Pets:
Other: (This didn't really fit in personality)
Her number one hobby (and skill) is procrastination, but that doesn’t really need to be gone into anymore. In summary she does everything possible to avoid having to get things done. The only things she can be expected to get done in any close time period would be those things everything else things are important or that she thinks are important. She has no other hobbies really, as they can all fit into the category of procrastination.
One of her best skills is probably her intelligence, which still doesn’t seriously need to be gone into. She may not be the all around smartest person, but she’s definitely on the higher end of intelligence. If only she had motivation, Tessarah could get a lot done. She doesn’t worry or stress over things, and she has the ability to be convincing and intimidating (she’s done both at home) but she simply has no motivation to carry anything out, nor will she likely ever want to get things done herself. Still, she is always happy to find a solution to some problem. She doesn’t know much about relationships, and she isn’t a psychologist, but other than that, Tessarah is good with problems.
She gets along well with small children. Mostly because they only need to be watched and told a story. Tessarah wouldn’t mind being stuck in a room with several kids that were six Turns or younger. So long as they didn’t go running off, she wouldn’t find them difficult to handle. She took of younger children back home sometimes, and she doesn’t mind seeing children at the Weyr either.
Tessarah is an excellent listener. This may not sound that spectacular, but there are actually a large number of people who are really bad at actually listening. It’s the difference between hearing some of the conversation while doing something else and realizing the deeper meaning in the words. Tessarah is good at doing the latter of those two things. This is part of the reason she is so good at helping people out; after all, if you can’t listen to people completely, how well can you understand what they really mean? Tessarah is kind of on and off with being a person that talks a lot herself. Sometimes she speaks, and sometimes she’s quiet It just depends on her mood mostly.
