Why an overgrown place, anything could be in there. And I can't exactly fit.
Despite Mermaiyeth's mild annoyance as she settled on the narrow strip of beach with a flick of her wings to clear whatever water from the spray might have settled on them, there was also curiousity. She was glad that Beka was happier lately, but when she got bored, Mermiayeth was beginning to ponder the merits of finding her something to do. Shrugging at her dragon, Beka merely pushed her hair back from her face and began walking, Valiant a blue spot on her shoulder that wasn't about to move any time soon.
"It's fine, I have Valiant." Flippant about her response, it only made Mermaiyeth's eyes narrow slightly as she watched her rider look over the beach at different sticks.
That's hardly comforting. What if you come across something bigger than him?[/i] She snapped and Beka shrugged again, picking up a stout stick and then placing it back on the ground and selecting a longer branch, one that had been resting closer to the line of trees and bushes and weighed it one hand.
"Well that's why I was looking for a stick." There was no hint of uncertainty in Beka's voice, evidence more than anything her life living with a Shunned father. Wilderness had been all she'd known before coming to the weyr, and she was hardly going to forget those hard learned lessons of life. Besides, she was bored, and the little island was a tempting, time-wasting expedition that she could do.
What will a stick do? There was no lacking in the scorn in Mermaiyeth's voice and Beka laughed.
"There's no limit to a stick's usefulness, Mermaiyeth. It can push branches aside, knock food down from a tree, scare an animal, make noise to avoid animals, and if the ground's soft enough you can score a mark and find your way back. But if you're really worried, you could always... I dunno, try to come with?" She sounded amused as the barred dragon shifted uneasily, glancing up at the trees, and then back at her rider who finally shook her head and quite confidently walked into the trees. Valiant chirped happily, resting on her shoulder and Beka laughed again, reaching a free hand up to pet him.
"Don't worry, Valiant. This'll be fun."
