"Would you *stop* playing with your food?" Gwen declared from the edge of the corral.
The words were, of course, directed at her dragon. The white was taking his own sweet time about selecting a beast. He took after his dam, at times, on that front. Nayarath definitely liked to play with her food.
And for right now, he was not listening to his rider. She watched him thoughtfully. He was still the only white dragon they had, and she wondered if others simply did not hatch. Then again, they hadn't had too many duds lately.
Tyrth's egg had, of course, been cracked open by one of his siblings landing on him. Which he thanked her NOT to remember for him...

From the higher perches of the feeding grounds a green watched the little white chasing the herds around. It kinda looked like fun, but completely confused her. Was he not hungry? Was he that bored to just go round and round in circles? It puzzled her, but each to their own.
"Don't even think about it..." Earisa warned her green. She had raised Maideneth to be obedient and well behaved, if only in her own energetic way. Already too many dragons ran the herds ragged, if Maideneth was to join them the herds would surely die! So instead they played a game.
"The black one in the front with the white front leg"
A scrap of claw against stone and a snapping of wings and it was all over so fast. Earisa'a heart leapt in her chest, Maideneth putting herself of a collision course with Tyrth just to snap up her kill right from under the white's nose. The green just elt smug with herself, taking her time to comfortably settle on a ledge to eat.

Tyrth glared at the green, then at his rider, then finally selected his own meal, dragging it to one side and tearing it open.
"Silly dragon. If you didn't take so long to choose, you wouldn't have greens pick them from under your muzzle," Gwen declared out loud, not caring if the green's rider heard her. SHE wasn't mad with Maideneth, after all.
A very bright colored green that one, she could not help but note. Definitely one of the more brilliant colors in the Weyr. She barely knew Earisa, mind...but then, the Weyr was filling up to the point where knowing everyone was starting to be tough.
It wasn't fair. Everyone knew *her*.

Tyrth didn't appear to be happy at her green's stunt, Earisa doubted many dragons would brush off the complete insult. While she may not have tried the stunt infront of a queen, the white was known to be very proud. She had better apologize to Gwen...
It had taken a little time to navigate down the few staircases cut into the cliff, all the while thinking how much easier everything was on dragon-back. Shards, she must be getting lazy! Asking to help in the lower cavern would fix that right up, it'd be like the good old days. Except she had a dragon.
"I'm so sorry about Maideneth, Gwen. She should have been more patient..."

"It's Tyrth's fault for trying to imitate Nayarath. Actually, it's Nayarath's fault. I'm sure he picked up the habit from her." Gwen smiled a little bit.
"But yeah. He's not pleased. I'm hearing all kinds of variations on 'upstart green' right now." The white knew he was special...knew it far too much. Gwen tried to keep people from reminding him of the fact, but it simply did not work. Anyone not from the Weyr would stare at the one of a kind dragon.
All of which encouraged him. Sigh.

"Yeah, I bet he loves all the special treatment everyone gives him because he's unique. He'll never be truly treated like a queen though." Earisa said with a kind smile. She was always happy to be a greenrider, she would never be singled out or have any high expectations of her. Maideneth was more then a handful for her, and her spirited and zippy nature made her unrecommended for first time flyers.
What's wrong, little white? Jealous of the Weyr's fastest flyer?[/i] Maideneth spurred, licking her talon clean. She had never really been able to understand something, a dragons worth seemed to be weighed by his or her size. That said, why did everyone think Tyrth was so special just because he was white? He had trouble keeping up with the rest of them, that had to be why.
Sympathy, how sad....

Gwen laughed. "I wanted a queen. I really thought I was cut out for nothing less. Then Tyrth had other ideas. But Tyrth has always been one to go for what he wants. I keep having to talk him out of trying to *chase* the queens. He couldn't catch them...and wouldn't know what to do with one if he did!"
Tyrth...studiously ignored Maideneth. She was being obnoxious and thus was beneath him. Utterly beneath him. Besides, she had no manners. He just made a hrmph sound that might well have been at his meal, and then chowed down, red blood staining his muzzle.

Earisa looked up fondly at her green. "I never wanted a queen, I was just a drudge girl. Queens dont impress to girls like me, dragons dont impress to people like me. But Maideneth wanted me, I must have been the only one with the patience and dedication to handle her." It would have been easy for one to become reckless with such a spirited dragon, but that would ultimately lead to a short life as a Rider.
Maideneth was amused but let it go. She wasn't going to lose her temper, actually it seemed Tyrth might though but she wasn't going to push it. He could think was he want.

Gwen considered that. "You never dreamed about it even a little? I thought all girls did, secretly." She fell silent for a moment.
"Not sure why Tyrth picked me. Maybe because I'm as vain about appearances as he is. I'm very glad whites are small...fairly often. He shows every speck of dirt and knows it." She glanced at the now red-muzzled white. "It'll be bath time soon."

Earisa shook her head, her short blonde hair flicking child-like with the motion. "Not once. Some people are happy with what they have, and wait for what is to come. Even if I never had impressed, I would be living among dragons for the rest of my life. Some people aren't that lucky." A Weyr was never supposed to go hungry, and there wasn't a place on Pern they couldn't go in the time it took to cough 3 times. Not to mention the handsome, strong and charming men she would have to choose from to be her mate. Yes, she would have been fine had see remained a drudge for the Weyr.
"No one knows what a dragon looks for, but I think that's half the fun! Impression would be so amazing if you knew exactly what you were getting, but no one cares after it happens if it wasn't what you wanted."

Gwen laughed. "Well, *nobody* expected Tyrth. I keep waiting each clutch to see if there will be another white. He, of course, hopes there won't be. He likes being unique."
She could hardly say she blamed the white dragon for that. She liked being unique, too, liked the way people who were not from the Weyr tended to double take at the white strand in her knot. Even the other new colors...none of them were *unique* in the way Tyrth was. "Although I think he does sometimes secretly wish his hide was bronze."
Would he have picked her anyway? There was now a precedent for such...

"Just bronze? Shards! He would be gold if he could!" Earisa laughed. Even the violet queen Jorindath acted as vain or snooty as the little white, he probably hated her now she laughed about it. Maybe that's why Nayarath and Tyrth got along so well, they had so much in common.
"So what have you got planned for the rest of the day? Except bathing Tyrth, of course."

"Nothing in particular. I don't have sweeps or drills, so I was going to do some strap maintenance and then relax."
Which was nice. Of course, Gwen never had to do long sweeps. Long flights straight were not what the white dragon was good at, although he was incredibly accurate at Between.
"And you're right. He would." Gwen grinned. "But I think he's more like a bronze in personality. He even tries to chase greens sometimes, but they know better than to let him catch. *They* know he wouldn't know what to do with them."
