Name: N'reus
Age: 31
Rank: weyrling master
Gender: Male
Sexuality: bisexual
Appearance: N'reus is just over six feet in height, broad-shouldered, and muscled as a dragonrider must be, yet still lean and well-proportioned. His skin is tanned golden, and a bit weathered from constant exposure to sun and the elements. Dark brown hair reaches to his shoulders, and is naturally wavy and unruly, so he often pulls it back into a runnertail while flying. His eyes are hazel, ranging from gray-gold to green-blue, depending on the day.
N'reus has a narrow nose and a strong chin to offset his wide grin, and his perpetual scraggly goatee gives him a somewhat rakish appearance. He's the kind of guy who hates buying new clothes, so he wears then ones he has until they're patched and frayed beyond all recognition, but he does all the mending himself. When is forced to buy new things, he has good taste, and he prefers dark blues, greens, and black for his outfits, in the loose vagabond style preferred by sailors. He's not much for ornamentation, but he does have a shark's tooth on a leather thong that he's had since childhood, and he keeps it as a good luck charm. Otherwise, he's got several scars from his rough and tumble life, including one above his right eye from his near fatal shipwreck and one across his chest from Roherynth's Impression.
Personality:
N'reus is a private person who keeps his innermost thoughts firmly to himself, but he's not afraid to stand up for his convictions when needed. Not that he's just hardheaded, he constantly revises his opinions based on new information, and he loves to learn. In fact, he an intelligent man with an appreciation for art, music, and nature, but he believes that he should keep this softer side of himself hidden. So must people know him just as a bold and friendly man, often laughing or smiling. He makes friends fairly easily, and is comfortable in social situations, but he is easily bored, and his restless spirit is often seeking out a new adventure to be had. He's also extremely brave, and was quite reckless as a young man, but caution has been slowly acquired with the wisdom of age.
This restlessness extends to his love life as well. Though he is attracted to both men and women, he isn't really comfortable with this part of his nature, as it wasn't acceptable in the culture he was raised in in. Most, if not all, of his public relationships have been and will continue to be with women, but it is a very strong or very foolish woman who will try to make him stay faithful for long. He's definitely a flirt, though he'd have to be drunk to hit on a man. Luckily for men, he's not a complete teetotaler, but don't expect him to stick around afterward. Even if Roherynth wins a Flight that involves a male rider, N'reus is gone before the sun comes up. He doesn't mean to hurt anyone by his antics, but his attraction to men is still a source of private shame, and besides all that, his life as a sailor made him believe that trying to be monogamous was a waste of time. Maybe he hasn't met the right person yet, certainly his reputation hasn't stopped people from trying.
In other areas of his life, he's known as a honorable man, and he values both duty and honesty. He'll go out of his way, even endangering his own life, to defend what is 'right'. He doesn't like to show his emotions, because he considers it unmasculine, nor does he like to ask for help. N'reus is an awful patient to have in the infirmary. But he's not an unkind person, he'll give help to those who ask, and has a sort of gruff tenderness with his lovers and his son. He's a little superstitious, as many sailors are, and it gives him a bit of charming eccentricity. Besides Roherynth, his two great loves are music and the sea. He loves to watch the water or to see storms roll in over the horizon.
History: Nereus was the second son out of a herd of children produced by Nereida, a failed weaver, and Marinus, a fisherman/smuggler of a small hold near Ista. Like many Crafters and Holders, they were very poor. Food was hard to come by, and many of the children turned to stealing to survive. Nereus was never close to his siblings, they were competition, but he was a resourceful lad, and by the time he was six Turns of age, he was gathering food from the sea to help himself and his family survive. His childhood was hard, yet he never remembered being particularly unhappy. It was the only way he knew.
At the age of twelve Nereus was deemed large enough to go to sea, and so at first he served as a sort of cabin boy on his father's ship, until he was strong enough to act as a regular sailor. He enjoyed the adventure, and he was young enough to be unfazed by the danger. By the time he was fifteen his father began to rely on him more, and they began to grow closer, but a freak storm dashed their ship onto the rocks of the Southern Continent, altering the path of his life forever.
He was found washed ashore among the wreckage by a dragonrider, last of a dying breed, and out of kindness or pity, the rider wasted no time bringing the boy to his Weyrhold. Certainly, bring near dead from dehydration and exhaustion, Nereus was hardly in a shape to protest. Once he was healed of his wounds, he really had no place else to go, not wanting to return to his starving family in Ista, so he stayed on at the hold as a kitchen worker. To his lasting surprise, when the Queen's paltry clutch Hatched he Impressed brown Roheyrnth and became a weyrling just after his sixteenth nameday.
Though he loved Roherynth, the life of a dragonrider was for many years, boring and unfulfilling. There were barely enough dragons to continue the species and dark words were spoken in the weyrhold's corridors. Morale was at an all-time low. When N'reus was 19, he sired a son, Nedian, during a mating Flight. Though he formed no attachment with the rider, he did his best to make sure his son was happy and healthy. The turns passed. The last fertile Queen laid her clutch in a volcano dotted with ruins. N'reus was one if those chosen to remain at this new site to guard the miracle clutch and Queen. So it was that he and his son were safe and uninjured when Thread fell for the first time in thousands of Turns. Suddenly, life had meaning again for dragonriders.
The past five turns have gone by in a blur. Building the new weyr, fighting Thread and raising dragons has been keeping everyone busy. N'reus was named the weyrling master two turns ago, when the former one retired, and he found, to his surprise, that he rather likes the job, and now that he son is just old enough to Stand for a clutch, it seems even more important.
-If a Rider:
Dragon Name: Roherynth
Dragon Age: 15
Dragon Size: 33 meters
Dragon Color: Roherynth is on the small side for a brown, but not ridiculously so. His hide is a rich brown reminiscent of the glossy wood of a fiddle, or the sleek coat of a chestnut runner. His proportions and musculature also lend themselves to comparison with a racing runner, he's all speed and supple strength.
Dragon Personality: Roherynth has the same bravery and restlessness as his rider, and half of the pair's adventures are his idea. Unlike N'reus, Roherynth enjoys being pampered and fawned over. He knows he's good looking, and loves to be the center of attention. The brown is a shameless flirt, as well as a matchmaker, and he helps N'reus in his amorous conquests by speaking to the dragons of those that catch his rider's eye. He doesn't really understand his rider's conflict over his attraction to men though, so they sometimes butt heads over this.
Roherynth is a dragon of middling intelligence, and he certainly doesn't share the love of learning or music, or any quiet pursuit that his rider enjoys, and gets very quickly bored. He doesn't even let N'reus sleep late. But he only enjoys activities that are his own idea, and N'reus often has to persuade or bully him into doing their more onerous duties. Luckily, his poor draconic memory means that his rider can use the same trick over and over again. Otherwise, Roherynth is an easy-going an affectionate dragon, and an eager listener to the problems N'reus would tell no one else, even if he doesn't understand them.
