N'reus squinted up at the sky as he walked out to his ledge. It was a deep, cloudless, blue. The air was warm and still. Almost too perfect a day really. He laid his hand against the smooth hide of his brown dragon.
Ask Wulth if he and the others are ready. And remind those sharding youngsters to get assembled in the Bowl too. It would make him look bad if those miscreants showed up late, and if they made him look bad in front of the weyrleader, he'd make sure they heard about it later.
Roherynth snorted his agreement. Wulth, Mine wants to know if you and Yours are ready. And the others too, he said, directing his mind to the large Tan before turning his thoughts to the young dragons under his charge.
Weyrlings, Mine would like to remind you that you are expected in the Weyrbowl today for weyrling examinations.
Before the youngsters were placed in a wing, they needed to be evaluated, their strengths and weaknesses found. There was several tests they would do of the dragons abilities, races, and acrobatic runs, but this test was the most important because it tested the rider and the dragon. It was a live firestone drill. The weyrlings would be split into two wings, and they would compete to see who was the best. The Weyrleader had gathered a bunch of older riders to throw colored string, simulating Thread. Of course it was a competition, and N'reus had a prize for the winning wing. But the main thing was that he, and probably half the weyr, would be watching from the ground, looking to see how the dragons flew, and how .the riders worked together.
N'reus smiled. This is going to be fun. Mounting Roherynth, they glided into the Bowl.
