It was a typical rest day; a day of no particularly event or importance as L'han and D'mas squared each other off in the training ring. Both men were seen a few times a week in combat training, trying to lead by example as current and previous Weyrleaders. Since the attacks on the violetriders, all riders had been encouraged to regularly practice in self defense practice. Some faces were seen more then others, and while it was near impossible to make training mandatory some had worked it into their weekly routine. Being a Rider didn't mean you were invincible to your fellow human being, it had been a lesson some tried to keep fresh in their mind. It was not surprise that both men were practicing together, they were quite evenly matched if in their own ways. D'mas had the greater strength while L'han was quicker on his feet. D'mas could spot weaknesses and opening while L'han knew a few dirty tricks. And if both were in good spirits loved to trash talk each other. "You haven't got long now till you're replaced, Weyrleader" "What? Going to take your place back?" "And give up all my free time? Hardly." "I can fix that either way, getting lazy are we?" "No, just that I think the bets are on Minalth winning. You'll be replaced by a weyrling!" "You weren't much more then one yourself when you became leader, D'mas" "And Kayth still beat Wuith. Nayarath must have felt sorry for him." "No respect for your elders, I see." "We're the same age, wherrybrain!"
L'han made the first move, the blow blocked easily. D'mas stayed on the defensive for a few hits before landing one on L'han's chest, but the tanrider had managed to hook his foot around the brozerider's to off balance them. Both men fell to the floor in a childish struggle before finally separating. D'mas was the first to pull himself to his feet, offering a hand to his opponent. "Aiming a bit low, weren't we?" L'han just grinned, rubbing his cheek and accepting the hand up. "Don't know, but I swear I've been slapped by a woman harder then that."

Not far away from the two, a bluerider rolled his eyes.
"Honestly, I've seen better fights in the creche," R'mer quipped. "What was that over?"
He had heard that words were being exchanged, but not their content. He didn't think it was really like the two riders to fight...unless it was all in good fun. Judging by the grinning he was seeing, though, he suspected it was. Which made him feel safe to tease a little...and if they united against him, then so be it. He wasn't the geeky, overweight teenager who had bonded Tinth, not any more...

"Over? Nothing. L'han used to use insults to try and unsettle his opponents, I've practiced enough against him to know how to use it against him." D'mas explained. Many might see it as personal squabbles, but it was just play. It was mostly the kind of stuff people expected them to fight each other about, it kept the rumors circling for those who loved gossip.
"Is that all we're really expected to talk about? Eggs, flights, leadership and Thread?" L'han complained. It's as if they themselves were dragons instead of just being the Rider side. It wasn't so bad till he became Weyrleader, it must come with the title and responsibility.
"Well maybe if you got yourself a Weyrmate you wouldn't be in this situation?" D'mas taunted in jest.
"Oh shut up, Shiny!"

R'mer laughed again. "Weyrmates. Now that would be nice...I need to find myself a cute greenrider one of these days."
The bluerider's preferences were, of course, well known, but there were relatively few male greenriders...and he had rapidly realized he was not remotely compatible with T'mar, even though the younger man was cute and not uninterested in males.
"As for you guys. Are you absolutely sure and certain you aren't brothers?" R'mer was relaxing more now it was even clearer that the 'fight' had not been for real or over anything...but they were acting rather fraternal, weren't they...

"Distant cousins, maybe, but not as far as I know. Some one has to make sure L'han doesn't get himself into too much trouble." D'mas explained, stripping off the practice padding. They flew in the same wing and had been seconds to each others Weyrleader, they knew each other well and worked well together. It's not hard to see that they were close friends.
"Yeah, he's not pretty enough to be my brother. Just look at the ugly blonde hair, cold blue eyes and he's much too tall." L'han listened off sarcastically, they were just too different. D'mas would have been popular with women even if he hadn't impressed a bronze, while it was hard to fine anyone that took the tanrider serious outside his role of Leader.

R'mer laughed again. "Good point...although around here, who knows who's really related to who."
Not all of the women kept good track of who had actually sired various of the squalling brats around the Weyr. R'mer was fairly sure none of them were his as only a flight would get him to sleep with a woman, but he did wonder if the bronze and tan riders could be as certain.
He started to wonder where a certain rider was, watching them in their easy friendship. Ah well. She was around somewhere and he'd track her down sooner or later.

"That's why we Search, to bring new blood in." D'mas stated, not that any of the Wey-born children were old enough to be candidates. The chances that his father wasn't his real one was small, not impossible but it was a fairly rare occurrence. Riders were much fewer 25 Turns ago as well. D'mas himself wished to stay true to his mates, neither Kora or Rebekah had produced him any children and no one was yet to claim him as a father.
"And it's written in the records nearly all Weyr-born males left the Weyr if they didn't become Dragoniders." L'han added, making himself comfortable in a seat. The records said a lot of things, didn't mean they had to follow them to the letter. There were always roles to play. "But none the less, I am the only one of my bloodline around that I know."

R'mer nodded. "And the rest of my family are all holders...and not particularly interesting ones at that."
The bluerider mused, "And they don't want me anyway. They don't care for my preferences."
Not common amongst holdfolk, that, and why there were a few non-rider men in the lower caverns who showed his inclinations...who were happier at the Weyr where they were more accepted.
