Name: J’ran (Jalran)
Age: 30
Rank: Brownrider
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Heterosexual(but Flight flexible, if he needs to be)
Appearance: J’ran is somewhat tall, about 6’3”, and has a slightly heavier build, although most of it is muscle, not fat. His arms and legs are tough after five years of caring for Ekirith, and the work that he did before coming to Nyocia Weyr has also made a difference in this. J’ran’s hands seem on the large side, better for handling things he says, but against his well-muscled build that is not always noticed.
J’ran’s face seems to make him look a bit older than he really is. A few early wrinkles from hours spent in the sun in his youth mar what could have been a very handsome face, and still could be if people bypass that. His eyes are a very dark gray-blue and although they hold life, never seem to betray expression. J’ran’s nose is narrow up to its tip, where it suddenly rounds out. It almost looks as though someone just attached a little ball to the end of his nose, sometimes influenced by how bright red it seems to turn when J’ran is cold.
Dark brown hair grows thickly from J’ran’s scalp. He keeps it short, but long enough to curl around his ears in a youthful manner that seems to betray his vaguely wrinkled face. Although J’ran isn’t the type to spend excessive amounts of time on his hair, he always makes sure it doesn’t look like a fire-lizard was nesting in it over the night.
Personality: J’ran can be a bit of a worrier, although he would never let it show to anyone but Ekirith. The Brown dragon is probably the only creature on Pern that he hides nothing from. Having worked in the mines when he was younger, J’ran has developed a sort of quiet, wary attitude that especially shows itself while fighting Thread or doing other potentially dangerous things. He never lets down his guard, although he not one likely to fight in a situation that it could be allowed.
On the other hand, J’ran is always willing to make conversation and would never turn down a nice woman. He is one that is usually slow with relationships though, it can take a while for him to open up to anyone, and even then there will always be things he hides. Once he has made a good friend, J’ran stays a good friend unless this person betrays him in some way. Forgiveness doesn’t come too easily to the Brownrider.
Like most people, J’ran is very full of all sorts of feelings and expressions, but prefers to not let onto them. A cheerful outlook on everything is what he does his best to maintain, fear and worry tend to be hidden beneath this. Anger and more sad feelings escape occasionally, although J’ran has a very slow temper. He is often sympathetic to others but in a friendly way, since he doesn’t like to show any worry he might have over the situation.
History: J’ran, then Jalran, was the son of a miner and a woman who was unlucky to enough to fall in love with him. His parents relationship didn’t last long, as his father, though a handsome man, was not an extremely friendly one and seemed only to attract people through his appearance. Finally Jalran’s father left the little family he had started, by then Jalren was four and had two little sisters, twins the age of one, to be with another man.
His mother found a new husband, who was friendlier than Jalran’s original father, but another miner, as she didn’t want to quite leave the little mining Hold. His first father left Jalren practically with homophobia though, as his father abruptly abandoning the family frightened him probably much more than it had his mother or little sisters.
By the time he was ten, Jalran had filled out quite a bit more than other boys his age and could probably pass as twelve. Because the family needed a little extra money, he began working in the mines with his stepfather, under the illusion that he was old enough. It didn’t make a whole lot of difference in the welfare of the family, but helped.
Having grown up around the mines, Jalren was very used to whers from a young age. When he heard of a clutch of twenty eggs laid by a Gold wher in a cave that wasn’t too far from their little Hold he decided maybe he could earn a few more Marks by becoming a wherhandler and so began the journey there. He was twenty-one then, and could only hope he could Impress before growing too old.
Bad luck seemed to follow his footsteps here though, for by the time Jalran arrived at the cave the eggs had been shipped off to other Holds for the whers to be raised with them. Had Sabre kept none? Apparently not. So he started home again, disappointed. His parents would probably be disappointed too, but it seemed there wasn’t much he could do about it.
As he headed home though, Jalran ran into a Bluerider taking his dragon for an exercising flight. The Blue circled down, telling its rider about how this lone boy seemed he would be a good Candidate for the clutch he was sure would soon be laid by an old Gold that was looking a little shinier than usual. Practically snatched as the Blue might have grabbed a herdbeast, Jalran was carried to the Weyr-Hold that she currently lived.
But that didn’t last long. When the Gold rose, she laid her clutch in an old volcano. Jalran was then taken there. He was still thinking more along the lines of Impressing a wher and then going home to his family (the Bluerider told him that he had alerted his parents to their son’s situation, although the boy wasn’t sure), but when the eggs hatched, he ended up Impressing a lovely Brown.
Because of Weyrling training, it was two years before J’ran could make a visit home to see his family again. It had been practically three years since he had seen them though, but his visit couldn’t last long. A rider now, the young man had a duty to his Weyr. But he assured them that everything was alright, told his sisters that maybe if they were good someday they could be Searched and Impress too, then returned to the Weyr. He has visited them periodically since, but does his best not to linger.

-If a Rider:
Dragon Name: Ekirith
Dragon Age: 8
Dragon Size: 37 meters
Dragon Color: Ekirith’s hide is an even brown, sort of a creamy-leather color. The tip of his tail and muzzle are oddly darker than the rest of him, and the edges of his wingsails seem slightly lighter than the rest of his shade. But other than that, he has no markings.
Dragon Personality: For the most part, Ekirith is a friendly and slightly more serious dragon. He loves to take part in a Green (and now, Violet and, maybe someday, Barred) Flight, and occasionally catches although it has been a while since he has last won. One trait around Ekirith that makes him slightly unique among Browns is that he really doesn’t like to lose repeatedly. Getting hurt by Thread is irritating, although he can stand it unless it happens a lot, and losing Green Flights against silly Blues? Unacceptable. He always does his best in everything he does, hoping that it will lead to triumph, and is always very disappointed when it doesn’t. Chasing Greens has mostly put a stop to his rider's homophobia, although Ekirith doubts his rider will ever find a true interest in men.
