What We've Got
- Open Positions for Sr. Weyrwoman (no, this isn't a mistake), Sr. Weyrleader, Weyrlingmaster, Lord and Lady of the Wherhold, and more. Applications
- An original (as far as the admin knows) plot using a combination of science, psychology, and torture of characters.
- A place where you can have crazy characters: Example
- Hatchings. One will be taking place sometime in September/Octoberr, possibly earlier depending on how many members join and how fast.
- We've got a place where whers can do more and be more than that one little board on the entire forum.
- A chance for your dragon color idea to become real on the site...there will be noncanon colors, and suggestions are being taken.
Long History
From their beginning in a small cothold in the outskirts Murmur Hold, Irida and Raska had always been the best of friends. They were poor children with little education; both of their fathers were wherless miners and their mothers worked hard to make ends meet. The cousins helped where they could- Irida, with her strong and sturdy body type went to work in the mines with the men, while the more delicate but never frail Raska trained under an aged weaver. Together the families survived harsh winters and searing summers, dreaming of a time when the Lord might help them and the other ragabonds.
But fortune came in a different way. Irida had been walking to the mine in the mounts where she was to work when she heard strange noises coming from the right side of the path. Always curious, she went to investigate. A wher hatching was in progress among the sparse coniferous trees...and they weren't happy to see her there. Irida was attacked by angry wild whers and left in critical condition. Some say the only reason she was able to survive such a horrific attack was the little voice of a green wher in her head that chanted her name and its own alternately: Irida! Irisk. Irida! Irisk... Irida managed to hang on to life until she was discovered by small group of miners who were brought by Irisk's vocal screeches.
Irida survived, and the family's fortune continued to become better and better. Now that Irida had a wher, the family could no longer be ignored by Murmur Hold, especially since Irisk showed an unusual ability to sense exactly where gemstones and precious metals were in the ground. Quickly the extended family was able to move into places of more comfort. Irida and Irisk became a respected pair among the many wherhandlers of Murmur Hold.
It didn't end there. In the next Search, Raska was proclaimed appropriate material for Impression at the nearby Aloric Weyr. To the delighted surprise of Irida and family, Raska not only Impressed, but she impressed to a lovely Gold by the name of Parinsoth. A scant five turns later, Raska and Parinsoth became the leaders of Aloric Weyr when the Sr. Weyrwoman and her dragon passed away.
It was here the story stopped being such a fairy tale. Raska found the Weyr was very prejudiced against the whers, and her friendship with Irida was very unpopular with the rest of the weyr. It made no sense to her or her cousin...Murmur Hold tithed to Aloric Weyr, and it was there the whers had gathered over time. The dragonriders and their dragons had a deep-set belief that whers should not exist and were twisted mutants.
Raska took steps to try to reconcile these beliefs with the ones she shared with Irida. Many were willing to listen. A good amount of the riders had come from Murmur Hold and knew what the whers meant to the miners. The others, however, thought the whers and wherhandlers were something close to filth, and outrage caught like fire...
Irida and Irisk had been visiting Raska and Parinsoth on a stormy afternoon when disaster struck. Some of the faction which disliked Raska and her ideas went far enough to try to kill her. An assassin was sent to dispatch the weyrwoman. Irisk was uneasy and sensed a man. She alerted Irida, who did not have time to warn Raska as the attack commenced immediately. Irida and Irisk shielded the weyrwoman with their bodies, and Irida was killed shortly. From there Irisk attacked the attacker, slaying him before running away and reverting to the lifestyle of a wild wher.
It was from Irida's selfless act that the names of the Hold and the Weyr were changed; from that point on steps were taken to form relations between the two.
But now, after years of perfect relations, things have become strained between the Wherhold and the Weyr for a multitude of reasons:
A new stone, lightstone, has been found in the mines. It's a curious stone that emanates a bright but not dazzling light, and slowly shifts color based on temperature. It was installed in places of importance instead of glows- a cloth could be drawn over it and then the light could not be seen. It's in the queen weyrs, where the Lord and Lady preside, and in communal areas. It was after this that the miners discovered that the rest of Pern also wanted this new stone, and the demand went up so high.
Also in current events is the deaths of wherries, whers, and other of Pern's original animals, excepting dragons and firelizards. Cancerous tumors overtake the bodies of the animals. Arguments have erupted between Irida Wherhold and Weyr over food for the dragons and whers; with the deaths of the wherries, they've become scarce in this area, although they seem to be abundant in the rest of Pern. Then the whers are dying as well.
There are rumors, too, of strange colors and mutations being seen in wild fire lizards in the area, but no proof.
To top it off, the Red Star has been in the sky for the past few Turns, and the dragonriders uneasily wait for Thread to fall once more on Pernese soil...
Residents in the area are confused, paranoid, and greedy...and many are wondering why all of these strange things are happening now. Both Irida Weyr and Irida Wherhold are prosperous and healthy...so why?
