"Yesterday, you had a family.
"You had parents, siblings, pets, friends, annoying cousins from Louisiana... maybe hundreds of people who loved you. Or maybe you didn't. Either way, whatever you had, you don't have it anymore.
"Now you have us. We are the Project. Welcome home, duckie."
Welcome to Project: Leviathan. You'll be staying a while. Once you've been picked up off the street, you aren't you anymore. In fact, you are dead, your body chilling in one of those cozy metal boxes at the morgue. Your body has been so horribly mangled by whatever it was that killed you that dental records will be needed for identification.
Right now, your family is either crying or laughing.
Either way, you're still dead, honey. Get used to it.
"Obviously, you aren't really dead. Dead people aren't nearly as smelly. But that's what everyone you knew thinks. I know Roland probably already went over this with you, but that elevator's pretty scary, and I personally don't remember any of the blather I got when I was captured, so I figure it needs a bit of repetition. Anyway. Whatever your name is, well, it's still your name, but all the records say that a person by that name has just been killed in some horrible, agonizing way."
That's right. Your life as you knew it is now over, just because you were unlucky enough to be born a Weaver, and then doubly unlucky in that we caught you. What's a Weaver? Why do we want you? They all ask that. And this is what we tell them.
"It says here I'm supposed to apologize to you, try to comfort you, but that's just my boss. He's kind of a pansy. In any case, not everyone here is as nice as he is, and I figure you need to get used to that early. Just don't tell him, he'll probably have a heart attack if he thinks I let you stay scared. And if you give my boss a heart attack, I'll personally make sure that you get attacked back.
"Newsflash, duckie: you're a Weaver. No, I don't mean you're some little old lady sitting in the corner knitting. If anything, you're more like a spider. Have you ever noticed that sometimes weird things happen around you? And I don't mean like your sock turns pink in the wash. That's just because you're stupid and put it in the machine with a red shirt. I mean big things. I'm sure you know what I mean. And if you've been hearing voices, unfortunately you aren't schizophrenic. Or maybe you are, since schizophrenics are just those of us lucky enough to escape enlistment because their minds just can't take it... Most of them end up drugged out of their minds. It's safer that way."
We can't tell you too much, of course. An untrained Weaver is a very dangerous thing, and we don't want you getting ideas into your silly little head before your training begins. So what you won't be told when you arrive is that Weavers are mighty creatures, born with the ability to shape words into raw power. Often the first sign of being a Weaver is hearing voices, because Weavers are also telepathic.
The Weaving ability can show up at any point in life. Sometimes it presents in ways other than telepathy - some young Weavers are already powerful enough to block unwanted chatter. These are the unlucky ones. The sooner you're captured, the less you'll have to miss about being free.
"Anyway, you've just been captured by the Project. Our official name is Project: Leviathan, but here we just call it the Project. We'd sound kind of stupid running around talking about it with its full name..... eh. In any case, Project: Leviathan is a branch of the government - yes, our lovely American government which just loves freedom and liberty and justice for all and all that - designed to capture, enslave, and train Weavers to be weapons.
"We're basically the army behind the scenes, only you can't escape by moving to Canada, because, well, the Project is there, too. Under a different name, of course. Something in French. But French or not, they'll grab you just like we did, and the only difference there's gonna be is that you'll be hearing people say "eh" a lot. By the way, if you happen to be Canadian or know anyone from Canada, that was not a slur against you or your people. I just like to say eh. Eh?
"...ahem. Any questions? Too bad. Either you'll figure it out during training, or you're just gonna die. Get used to the idea."
The Project has existed since the beginning of, well, government in the world. The moment non-Weavers discovered us... Well, you know human nature. We were scary, now, weren't we? We had to be controlled. Tamed. Eventually, the killing and the burning and the taming all changed into capture-and-train. We're weapons for the government. Almost every country in the world has a secret army of Weavers.
Recently, World War Three erupted in Europe. Something about chocolate, I think. Or maybe just Swtizerland, hold the chocolate. Anyway, I think somebody bothered Switzerland, and all those people who like Switzerland bothered back. But don't trust me, you probably know much better than I do. We in the Project aren't allowed to know anything except who to aim at. If you want information, you'll have to wait until you're sent into the field and can snatch a newspaper or something. You aren't allowed out until you can be trusted.
Not that you could run anyway. After all, that tracker in your throat is very good.
"My name is Oliver, Agent N00385, alias Lucy Warren when in the field. As for why I'm a girl named Oliver, two things: one, my parents were cruel, and two, shut up or you'll be looking for your nose. In your ear.
"I've been assigned to look after you until you're settled in your training. Just a head's up - I don't like you, and I'm not nice to people I don't like. Until you convince me to like you, you'd better toe the line, duckie, because I'm a good agent and if I say whatever you did merited destruction, the high-ups will believe me.
"Welcome to the Project, honey. You'll be staying a while."
