T'mar was performing an activity that took a lot of the greenweyrling's time. Namely, bathing Freyjath.
She was not the kind of green to turn this into a waterfight or a lot of play, but rather rested in the water, crooning softly as he found a particularly itchy spot.
She was what he had wanted but managed not to be what he had expected. That is to say, she was not exactly, so far, a very typical green.
There were few candidates, right now, to observe them enviously, but with Kelth having flown, that would change. It would be odd to be on that side of the equation.
"You know. We won't be the youngest very soon." And Freyjath was young. She had hatched towards the end, had she even been last? Maybe. But it didn't matter.
"You're getting big."

That Green bathes much too nicely, Amirinth commented, her eyes whirling with amusement.
I suppose you’ll have to mess things up for them too then. K’laon sighed. He loved Amirinth, but she was such a terror when it came to bathing! As if to prove the thought, Amirinth suddenly leapt into the air, spreading her wings to glide the extra distance to the lake, and then curled almost into a ball before she smashed into the lake. A huge wave soared up around her, carrying with vicious speed towards the shallows before smashing against the shore.
K’laon, at least, had stopped a safe distance from the edge but others might not be so lucky to avoid the splash. It really didn’t matter though; Amirinth would have him soaked to the bone soon enough. He took off his shirt and threw it even further from the lakeshore, hopefully he could have at least one dry particle to put on after.
Come on K’laonMine! Amirinthlove’s hide itches!
Oh shards, K’laon recognized the boy and Green. It was someone he knew at least a little, T’mar. After bragging about Amirinth to him, it was going to be a pain having the Green embarrassing him. Maybe you could be nice for once.
Well, that’s not particularly interesting, is it?

T'mar acked as *somebody* splashed into the lake. "Hey, ya big green, parts of me were actually dry!" he called.
His tone didn't show anger so much as amusement, though.
I don't do that Freyjath sent primly to both her rider and Amirinth.
Which green is that, anyway?
Amirinth
T'mar glanced around. "K'laon! I see the second best green on Pern likes to try and start water fights."
He bet the other greenrider would disagree. But Freyjath was the best, that was all there was to it.

Amirinth rumbled at the sound of T'mar's voice. At least she had successfully gotten someone wet who didn't want to be. The younger Green had to be crazy though, so easily denying any splashing. Of course she hadn't, but why didn't she want to?
"The second best Green on Pern?" K'laon replied indignantly. "Some of that water must have gotten into your brain! Amirinth is obviously the best. All good Greens start waterfights anyways."
It was possible anyways. Maybe Amirinth was simply the only good Green around, since she started them every time she was near the water. "I don't see Freyjath doing anything interesting, anyways."
Amirinthlove will have to teach her, Amirinth commented to her rider cheerfully. Hurry up, bathtime!
Today he knew for sure that it wasn't really going to be Amirinth's. He scooped up some sand anyways, Amirinth would let him at least get rid of her itches.

T'mar eyed Amirinth rather suspiciously. "No corrupting my dragon!"
Freyjath sent a draconic giggle, turned in the water...and splashed T'mar. "Gah. Too late." Of course, he couldn't splash the green dragonet back. Well, he could, but t would be a waste of time.
"And second best. Obviously, Freyjath is the best. Of course, every dragon is the best, really." To their riders, that is. "Reckon Freyjath will be bigger than Amirinth or smaller?" he asked, moving to scrub her again. She nudged him, affectionately.

K’laon laughed as Freyjath splashed her rider. Yup, too late. Amirinth gave her head a proud toss. Look at how the younglings treat Amirinth as a roll-model! She is very proud.
Oh I’ll bet. K’laon rolled his eyes there and scrubbed at a spot at the base of Amirinth’s neck that she complained about often. “If every dragon is best, than Amirinth is better than the best.” He gave T’mar a sideways look and grinned. “If you think your dragon’s best, I don’t think you can admit to them all being so. They aren’t, anyways.” The Brown that had last caught Amirinth, for example, wasn’t. She had been rather impressed by his lazy attitude, something she had never seen in a Flight, but he had not been particularly interesting in the short time he spent in their weyr after the Flight. His rider, as K’laon remembered, hadn’t been either.
K’laon didn’t even have to think about the answer to T’mar’s question. “Bigger. Freyjath is small, but Amirinth was smaller.” The little Green had looked as pitiful as she had acted, really. At least she had filled out some after eleven Turns of life.
K’laonMine never said anything about Amirinth growing big, Amirinth told Freyjath. All the other dragonets were always so much bigger, it almost didn’t seem like she was growing! He had noticed at bathtime though, when Amirinth had gone from only being able to splash him to being able to make great crashing waves of water.
Good times.

T'mar nodded. "Tyrth is the really small one, though. Although he *is* growing. So is Freyjath."
He glanced at Amirinth. "Isn't she the smallest green in the Weyr?" He thought so. He grinned back. "Every dragon is the best to their rider. But Freyjath is still the best. I can't wait to find out what she's like in the air."
I'll be bigger? The young dragon looked up at Amirinth. Who, though small, was considerably larger than the dragonet.
"They're very different shades of green, too."

"Yeah, but he's a different color." What else could one expect of a dragon with all the pigment sucked out of his hide? It seemed natural that a white dragon would be small. "All the young dragons are growing." Just to point out the obvious. "And the rest of them are itching."
You're not washing fast enough! Amirinth splashed K'laon playfully and then gave him a bump with her tail towards the base of her wing, which was itching quite abominably.
"The smallest adult Green." K'laon nodded. Of course the hatchlings were smaller. Some small ones had hatched too, but even that little Maiath was bigger than Amirinth now. "You can think what you like, but it'll never make Freyjath better than Amirinth." Amirinth rumbled and bobbed her head.
Very different shades... "Yup." K'laon only knew a few other dark green Greens; the majority of them tended towards lighter shades. He preferred the darker ones, like Amirinth.

T'mar compared the two greens, while scrubbing. "They're both very well put together, though. I think Nyocia is just breeding really nice dragons."
The clutch had held some beauties, if he stepped back and forced himself to be objective about it. His Freyjath was simply the very best of the lot of them.
"I'm guessing Amirinth won't be the smallest adult *dragon* much longer, but yeah. Tyrth doesn't really count."
Well, he did, the white would fly and fight, but...

"Of course, Amirinth was born some time before Nyocia was formed... but it is." Amirinth was, of course, better, but at least all of the dragons were doing well. The two queens had definitely been doing a good job keeping the weyrling barracks populated, anyways.
There have been some lovely Blues, Amirinth rumbled.
What about your precious Browns? K'laon raised his eyebrows and Amirinth snorted softly, saying that they were much too busy chasing Violets. She would just have to make do with Blues for now, and maybe that White someday.
"Nope." It was kind of disappointing... but he still had the smallest Green. "He's still a dragon though, even if there aren't any others like him." How well would a White do fighting Thread? From the few stories K'laon had heard about the first one, it hadn't been a fighting dragon, but ridden by a Lord Holder instead. Odd.

"Doesn't count in that he's not a green, and we were talking about the smallest greens. Whites are a different thing."
He kept scrubbing. "Still, it's not like she's going to be huge. I can handle whatever size she ends up, but I'm glad she's not some great galumphing bronze or brown."
The white, he wouldn't have minded Impressing himself. A very pretty dragon, that one, except, of course, that he wanted a girl dragon. "I feel very lucky."

K’laon shrugged and spluttered when Amirinth splashed him again for doing something other than scrubbing her. Sharding dragon. “I think I said that,” he coughed, struggling not to glower at his Green. Amirinth rumbled, liking that her rider refused to get after her in front of the weyrling.
The Greenrider looked over Freyjath again. “No, she won’t be too big. And small dragons are definitely better.”
Bronzes and Browns give more interesting Flights, Amirinth told Hers and Freyjath cheerfully. Supposing they chase, at least. She wasn’t even sure the Blues would keep chasing Greens; even though they kept losing, they had seemed determined lately to catch queens.
“You should.” But K’laon was luckier. Even if Amirinth had some sort of issue with baths, she was the best dragon out there. The Green, apparently feeling the need to prove the former of her riders thoughts, bounded abruptly away, sending water everywhere behind her.
Do you ever fish, little Freyjath? It was much more interesting than bathing.

Freyjath shook her head and then ducked her snout under water to blow bubbles at the older green.
T'mar laughed quite a bit. "I guess I was...I was expecting a green, but I didn't expect...does anyone ever really know what it's going to be like until they're chosen?"
He ran his hands along Freyjath's form. So warm, so smooth, such a lovely... Love. It was love, and it transcended love.
And it was inescapable.

Amirinth stuck her head under the water and blew bubbles right back, then rumbled and paddled deeper, happily waving her tail around to leave a trail of dancing water behind her.
"Well, you've gotta be one of the first people I know who gets close to what they expect." He hadn't expected a Green, although he was happy to have one now. Usually, anyways. "And of course no one knows. If they think they do, they're definitely not gonna get it." K'laon didn't think dragons liked people who could predict them.
They don't. Amirinth laughed and spat some water at her rider. That younger Green didn't seem to be a very interesting companion, why did she stay when she could be playing with Amirinth?

T'mar laughed a bit at that. As for Freyjath, the second he finished scrubbing the tip of her tail, she shook herself, all over him and any bits of Amrinth that happened to be close.
"Freyjath! I don't need to bathe!"
She swung a wing and drenched him. Yes you do!
He couldn't stop laughing. "I bathed this morning, you...you...green."
A warble came from her. "And...yeah...like Gwen, who was so sure she'd get the gold and ended up with a *male* dragon. And...think about the first tan and violet riders, when we didn't know there would be new colors." He splashed Freyjath back.
She just warbled again.

Amirinth rumbled as the younger Green shook. Much better. Maybe Freyjath wasn't totally hopeless.
She's going to be if she spends too much time with you, K'laon laughed. "Greens never think they're riders are clean enough," he told T'mar. "But they don't put a thought into their own hygiene."
Yes we do! Amirinth tossed her head and scratched up some mud from the floor of the lake, then turned and watched it rinse off her paws again with fascination. See, it's that easy. She only had to be in the water for it to clean her up.
K'laon nodded. "Those new ones were a shock. Especially the Violet." A new queen had been the last thing K'laon, and probably most people, had expected.

T'mar nodded. "The barreds and white, not so much, now people knew weird stuff was going on."
His green shook herself again, then padded towards the shore. "You need oiling, Freyjath?"
She snorted back at him and he laughed, and followed. He shook the water off himself, much as his dragon had. "Freyjath would have to be vain to care, and she isn't really." It was interesting how she had developed her own distinct personality, but there were echoes in it of his. How would she change him? Time would tell.

K'laon nodded. "But they still sort of shocked me. And after the Barreds, I really expected Kelth to lay a bunch of new colors... but instead we got a couple duds." Maybe it was the stud. A Violet and a Tan would surely have interesting offspring...
A Violet wouldn't out-do a Gold. Amirinth rumbled. Even in what they clutched. Nayarath wouldn't be happy at all if not only was she upstaged by her daughter and a White, but a Violet who hatched a whole batch of new dragons.
"Amirinth likes to pretend to be. Mostly she's just crazy though, huh bug?" Amirinth spat water at him in reply and dove under the waves. She felt like fishing now.

T'mar laughed. "Crazy and green seems to be redundant."
Freyjath snorted at him, settling onto the shore like a light green jewel while T'mar hunted down the oil. "Maybe we have all the new colors there are going to be now. That would be a shame. I'd love to see, say, a red dragon."
To see. He wouldn't have wanted some fancy new color himself. Green was perfectly fine. "Or a black one. Black would be spectacular."

“True.” K’laon laughed. Then the queens were vain and Barreds tended to be on the irritable side… every dragon had some sort of mannerism that went along with its variety, it seemed. He quite preferred his crazy Green.
Oil? Amirinth popped out of the water suddenly much closer to K’laon, a couple fish dangling from the edge of her jaw. She promptly swallowed them and then swung her gaze towards T’mar. K’laonMine, you should oil your Amirinthlove.
“Red or black?” K’laon raised his eyebrows. “I’ve never liked either of those colors.” Red was the color a dragon’s eyes went when they were angry anyways, and he didn’t need dragons frolicking about the Weyr who were always angry. Black? He just didn’t trust it. “I think that maybe… well, I like the multi-colored dragons we’ve been getting lately. I wouldn’t mind more of those.” Barreds were already Green-ish and another color… maybe blue and something would be nice. He didn’t know quite what though.
Amirinth thinks that something speckled like some of those runnerbeasts would be quite lovely. It would have to be male. She bumped K’laon with her nose and then strode around him towards the shore
