Seasons shift and times may change, but some things remain eternal... Like dragonflight, for example.
Tensions have strained the once-strong bond between Caufar Weyr and Three Rivers Hold after green Iaith, recently graduated form Weyrlinghood, rose mid-way through the Turnover Gather Lord Restair was hosting to welcome the birth of his first grandson, Aidran. Though her rider, S'cros, had to sense to take himself - and his pursuants - far enough from the Gather grounds not to cause a spectacle, the call was far too close for Restair's liking, and now many a young green rider is eyed with suspicion on Three Rivers land. S'cros, however, seems to feel little guilt over the accident, but perhaps that's because he's too busy reassuring the flight's victor, blue rider K'quel, that he's done nothing wrong by obeying Maxioth's whims...
Not to be outdone by her emerald sister, junior gold Sylfaeth took to the air a few sevendays later, and, after a brutal maiden flight into the skies, was caught by bronze Quidulceth, making his rider, V'ren, Caufar's newest Junior Weyrleader. While it's hoped that the older, dutiful rider will bring a much-needed degree of age and experience to Caufar's young leading forces, the cantankerous, work-obsessed V'ren might be too much for his headstrong, temperamental partner, Anodelle... Not that they'd ever let it show in public, Pern has its hands full with Caufar's Seniors as it is!
As Weyrwoman Araceli nears the impending birth of her child, Darksea's Lady Holder keeps an even closer eye on the gold rider, and Nuriel's brother, Rieri, has let hints drop that Darksea would be glad - perhaps even required - to foster the youngling, but why? In the face of Weyrleader I'vrae's growing confusion and worry, is it possible that Araceli will reveal just why their babe - "the bastard of dragonriders" - would pique such interest in the Weyr's least faithful Hold?
The Weyrleaders aren't the only parents with a lot on their plates though... Candidatemaster T'bin is faced with the third pregnancy amongst his students in the last six Turns, and this time, the guilty party is his own daughter, Aylin, who let herself cut loose at the Turnover Gather, and is now paying the steepest price: her father's disappointment. But Aylin is only one of T'bin's numerous children, and as tensions grow between the gaggle of half-siblings, riders, Weyrlings and Candidates alike, all vying for their father's love, it's impossible to say if any of them will call what's left in the end a family. Weyrlingmaster Shiandra must also come to accept that her daughter and only child now outranks her, as Junior Weyrwoman. Perhaps it is at last time that Shi let go of Anodelle, and watched the girl make her way in the world... But will Shiandra be content to accept that now her daughter addresses her by title, and her only "children" will be her Weyrlings?
Ah, the Weyrlings... While the students of Frosted Twilight Group seem to be getting along with one another famously, those of Vernal Mist have done nothing but fight, nitpick, attack and play pranks on one another since Impression! With a sensitive, easily-influenced gold rider and two women riding brown dragons in their ranks, not to mention prejudices and stereotypes all around, is it possible that Vernal Mist will ever be able to pull their socks up and work as a cohesive unit, or will they be just another black mark on Caufar's already trembling record?
Perhaps a natural disaster is just what the Healers have ordered to bring everyone together... Recently struck by an unexpected hurricane, Darksea Hold and the coastal Dolphincraft Hall lie nearly in ruins, with most of the Hold's fishing fleet destroyed, resources lost, and lives in desperate need of rebuilding. With her home's industrial life blood devastated, Lady Nuriel, however reluctantly, has bowed her proud head and accepted the aid of Caufar Weyr, lest she be accused of negligence and brought before the conclave. Even now, volunteer labor and supplies are being called in from all corners of the planet as Holders and riders, dragons and dolphins, pool their resources to help get Darksea back on its feet. But will Darksea remember those who came to their aid when things return to normal?
Yes, seasons shift and times may change, but some things remain eternal... Sylfaeth grows heavier with egg by the day, and as she nears her clutching date, with a hatching on the horizon close to follow, Candidates are being Searched from high and low, and they aren't the only new arrivals...
Perhaps you could be one of them?
