It was all very strange. AIVAS helped to knock away the Red Star, and the dragon population just got smaller. Watch-whers and fire lizards started disappearing too. So much in fact that a lot of people forgot about them. Eventually, Holds just stopped having watch-whers, and over a few Turns, the species completely disappeared. Fire lizards weren’t gone because a lot of people liked them, but their population was dwindling too.
Dragons were disappearing a lot too. Every Turn there were less and less dragons. Nobody needed them, so they all figured there was no point in having them around anymore. All they did was eat food people could eat instead.
But after a few hundred Turns, Thread started falling again, and this time, the Red Star didn’t have an erratic orbit, but one that always kept it close to Pern. Thread would stop falling for maybe 10 Turns, and then it would start falling again. With so few dragons in the Weyrs, it seemed hopeless.
All the remaining dragonriders decided to band together into one Weyr (Nulleta Weyr) in the Southern Continent, where there were rumors about strange reptiles. The one Gold queen left was rather small, and clutches were nowhere near large enough for the Weyr to be populated once again with dragons.
One Thread-fall, when there were maybe only a hundred dragons and riders desperately trying to protect Pern from the Thread-fall, something very odd happened. Out of between came a creature no one had ever seen before.
It was much too small to be a dragon, only about 3 feet in length. It had fur instead of scales and it seemed like it was related to canines as well as dragons. The creature had wings like dragons and could fly, and go between it seemed. It attacked the Thread with vicious flames without firestone. After a few minutes, it went between again, and the bewildered dragons and riders set their attention on the Thread.
In another 10 minutes, there were about 100 of the creatures in different sizes attacking the Thread. When the Thread-fall ended, they all disappeared between. The Weyr tried to think of where they had gone, and though they searched for the creatures, they never found them.
Every Thread-fall, the creatures, which the Weyr decided to call Adinos, attacked the Thread. And after the fall ended, they vanished again. It didn’t really matter where they came from as long as they could help the desperate Weyr.
However, one day a young weyrling rider named Yanta practicing to go between wound up in the wrong spot. Stuck alone with only her dragon, green Takinith, the weyrling, not wanting to go between again, walked through the jungle. She came across, to her surprise, a small egg that was hatching.
Out of the egg came an Adino, and Yanta became the first person to Impress to one of the strange creatures. It was discovered that, like dragons, Adinos could speak telepathically, though their sentences were much simpler than ones dragons used.
After Yanta Impressed to her Adino, everyone saw a lot more of them. They all lived in a few different packs, each with about 100 individuals. All of the packs moved closer to the Weyr for some reason. Over 100 Turns, Adinos became very common. Everyone could have one if the wanted and they were very helpful for attacking Thread, even though the Weyr was still tiny and lacking in dragons.
Much mystery surrounds these creatures. Were they created on purpose? Are they the result of an experiment gone wrong? Is evolution what created them? No one knows where they came from, but it is something everyone wants to find out.
Well you help make a difference and help save the only Weyr from destruction?
Current Info:
