B'can had developed a bad habit of late of skipping breakfast. Until somebody mentioned in Apolloth's hearing that that was bad for riders.
He had thought dragons had bad memories. Maybe they did, but APolloth had just repeated his own thoughts often enough to remember them.
Either way, the tan was not going to leave his rider alone until he started eating breakfast again. Thus, B'can made his way into the dining hall at a pretty early hour, Guess on one shoulder and Stare on the other. Hopefully, he could at least find some company. If not Bry, then...somebody?
Food. He found himself a plate and piled it high, not having realized just how hungry he was until he got within smell range of the kitchens...

“It’s nice to know I’m not the only early bird Weyrling around here for a change.” An older boy, or more man, set his plate down and sat next to B’can. But despite his cheerfulness, D’mar looked like he could have slept for a few more hrs by the state of his hair or the sleepy look in his eyes. Barred Memory and Brown Eron landed on the table, eyeing off the bronzerider’s plate till he offered up a piece of ham each.
“One of these days I’ll relearn how to sleep in, but it’s hard to give up years of waking at dawn. So what’s your excuse?” D’mar didn’t wait to hear an answer before stuffing him mouth. If he didn’t eat, then his firelizards would be more then happy to clean his plate before he realized.

"I thought I Impressed a dragon," B'can quipped. "Not a hopeless nag." The affection in his tone was impossible to hide.
"Ooh. You have a barred firelizard...she's really pretty. You're...D'mar, right?" Was he keeping his names straight? Another thing Apolloth liked to nag about.
"Actually, no. What I really Impressed was pure ambition, just shaped like a dragon." He knew that as soon as he was old enough, Apolloth would set out to catch a gold. Violet? Those would be for practice. And he knew which gold he wanted his tan to catch...

"Bronzerider to Kayth and graduating Weyrling." D'mar informed him. "That little beauty is Memory, quite a smart little firelizard who likes to make sure I'm where I'm supposed to be. Eron sadly just seems to come along for the ride."
Memory shrilled happily, hopping over to B'can. D'mar had to interfere, pulling gently on the barred’s tail as she reached out to steal from the tanrider’s plate. “She also likes to exploit innocence when there’s food involved.” But Memory was already curled up in a sulk.
“Ambition isn’t so bad, it leads to purpose and results in fulfillment. Kayth… well, he may poke around more then he should and ask too many questions but he’s never done wrong.” The once copper-ish hatchling had grown into a large dragon who had already risen to chase, though maybe it had been a bit too soon to be chasing queens. Kelth had rejected him in favor of Wuith, a suitable match since L’han was acting Weyrleader.

B'can laughed. "I already gave a good part of my breakfast to mine." He gave Guess and Stare arch looks.
The latter hopped over to the barred, peered at her, then nudged her with her nose. Come on! CHeer up! Play with me!
"These two rascals are Guess...that's the brown...and Stare. Original names, I know." As for chasing queens, that would be a while for Apolloth. Maybe B'can could persuade him to practice on a barred or two first. Some of the barred riders were, while not Brylorea, cute enough.

“Still, she should have asked or waited till it was offered as she does know better.” Memory huffed softly before finally looking up to touch noses with the green. Her troubles forgotten, and her stomach too it seemed, her wings unfurled downwards in a sweep to bring them up and showed off the bright purple stripes running down her sides.
Eron rumbled softly, watching Guess intensely and daring him to get anywhere near the barred. “Don’t worry about him, I think Memory is getting ready to rise to mate and they’ve never been separated. He’s only being protective of what he thinks is already his.” D’mar didn’t seem all that worried about his pets. It seemed just about ever female dragon and flit was doing the same thing, what a disaster the next few months could be.
“Anyway, I hear your pretty fond of our young goldrider…” D’mar would never say where he heard, though Keyth probably would. He just wanted to know if it was right.

B'can turned scarlet. "Fond, yes." But he wasn't sure Brylorea's dragon would ever bow to mating with a 'mere' tan...even if Apolloth was growing to be a large tan, longer than some small bronzes.
For now, he tried to play it off, but he could not hide the reaction to even the thought of her...and no matter what, it would be months before he could even kiss her...especially with Voluspath being so much younger than Apolloth. Still, others had handled the wait. He could if she could.
Right now, he didn't even want any other woman, although he knew it might be unavoidable, for Apolloth would hit his sexual maturity and he was not going to, ever, inhibit his dragon.

"I would say that's an understatement." The bronzerider said with a playful nudge. D'mar had no objections to tans flying golds, why would he? The odd brown was known to catch queens, which happened more when the riders where involved with each other.
"Mating flights mean nothing you know, neither does it matter who you should love because of what color dragon they ride. Shaydor sleeps with any man willing enough..." The man shuddered in memory of his close escape from the violetriders clutches when Keyth lost Kelth's flight.
"That woman scares me..."

B'can winced. "I heard that. At least I'm safe from her for now. And I know, but I also know APolloth is going to chase Voluspath and be upset if he loses."
He might win. And if he did? B'can was not sure he was close on ready to be a junior weyrleader. He wasn't sure he was ready to be a wingrider. But Apolloth had other ideas.
Apolloth was eyeing the Weyrleader's ledge and there was nothing B'can could do about it. It was the way his dragon was.
"But Bry...she's special. I can't get her out of my mind and I don't really want to try."

"That's something special right there, if she feels the same. But if you love her, don't let her go for any reason." It seemed nice to be a love sick fool, for one who as of yet had little feelings of attraction to any of the females. He only knew of the ons he wanted to stay away from, but everyone does one way or another.
"Well? Does she like you back?" D'mar pressed, either not noticing or not caring that his breakfast was being devored by firelizards. There was plenty more where that came from.

B'can smiled. "I think so...right now, anyway. I can't assume her feelings won't change before Voluspath grows up, but I can keep hope, and your firelizards are eating all of your food."
At this point, it wasn't just D'mar's firelizards, either. Guess and Stare were hungry too! Well, Stare stole a bit off of B'can's plate, but she always did. She was very much still a growing hatchling, unlike her definitely completely grown up sire.

"Let them have it, we end up spoiling them too much anyway." D'mar poked Memory belly, causing him to be scolded through a half filled mouth. The barred stopped in the same breath as she nearly choked, only to go right back to eating. "I should make you catch your own breakfast once in a while."
"Don't worry B'can, women will come and go. Weyrmates change all the time and there are some, like Shador, who decide they can't settle with just one person." It was afterall how the weyr worked. You can be attached to someone but they will never be exclusively yours as there was no such thing as marraige with in the Weyr.

B'can nodded. "I know that. Although I wonder what would happen if Shador or somebody like her got pregnant. I mean, they wouldn't know who their father was."
When there had been multiple Weyrs, somebody in that position could transfer to reduce the risk of sleeping with a half-sibling...but now?
"I think women should at least try to keep track, and there's a couple, I don't know how they could. Not, you know, saying it's wrong to have some fun." Of course, rider women didn't get pregnant as easily as holder girls.
B'can wondered, though. He'd like to father a child, maybe, one day, when he was a bit older, even if he knew he wouldn't be able to raise it.

"It’s not as catastrophic as you might think. Many rider pregnancies are aborted when riding back and forth between, accidently or on purpose. You must not be that far in your teachings.” That piece of information had been more directed at the girls but it was common knowledge for riders.
“Besides, I’m sure they can keep track of who they had in their beds at roughly what time.”
((fail...))

B'can nodded. "I know it's harder for rider women to get pregnant and stay pregnant, but some definitely manage it."
Of course, he suspected some were those who deliberately tried, and it was probably easier for queenriders than those on fighting dragons. That was probably why there had once been a tradition of preferring men for any dragon that would take one. He also knew that some girls turned down Search for that exact reason.
<even more fail, maybe we should end it and do something else?>

"Well I don't know about you, but right now I feel like im losing my manhood as we chat away like a couple of Aunties over woman matters..." D'mar said, turning to frown at his empty plate. Normally his firelizards left him something, but it hadnt been just them this time. Memory and Eron were lying sprawlled out on the table, their stomachs bulging and a sleepy look in their half open eyes.
"I need some klah if im going to last till lunch, want any while I'm up? Or would you rather we stretch our legs to wake up?"
((Couldn't help the opening comment xD))

B'can laughed. "I think you should eat some actual breakfast before *your* dragon turns into a nag."
He eyed his firelizards...who were now after his plate. "More klah would definitely be good, though."
And he elected to *eat* the rest of his food before any of it got stolen. There was a fair amount of it, there being a fair amount of B'can...he was not tall, but he was broad and muscular.

D'mas left and returned with half a meat roll in his mouth and a mug in each hand. Being careful not to slop the Klah all over the place he set B'can's infront of him before dropping back into his chair. "If all I cuf-" He started before taking the roll out of his mouth. "Sorry, its all I could have managed without learning to juggle."
The bronzerider didn't seem all that worried about his meger meal, but it would be his own fault later if he was hungry. D'mas nearly fit the quota of a perfect rider to the finest detail; tall, muscled and very easy on the eyes. A skipped meal wouldn't effect him. Never would he treat his dragon it that way though, but the big bronze only ate once or twice a sevenday. It was all up to whatever they had been up to.
Drapping Eron over one arm, he drank with his free hand. "So tell me about your class? Which are trouble makers, who are dimglows and who do you think might try to muscle in on your girl?"

B'can laughed, sipping at the klah. Then he considered. "Not worried about most of them on the muscling in...it was a small clutch, so we're pretty tight. Apolloth's the biggest male...I'm suspecting brown and violet can't go above tan, maybe. Hard to tell yet."
Apolloth was, of course, a *big* male. "A couple of browns, and I'd worry about them, but Bry doesn't seem interested and Voluspath would never let a brown fly her. I'm not sure she'd let a tan fly her. She's kind of rank happy."

"Maybe its a gold thing..." D'mas pondered while taking another sip. "The queen of my clutch, the large violet Jorindath, hasn't used her authority over anyone that I know of. She treats everyone the same, as does her rider." The girl was prone to what she called 'creativity block' which could make her a little unattached from the group as she recovered her thoughts. Still, while she was pretty and all, with the second largest dragon in the Weyr up to date she would have her pick of males when the time came. D'mas just wasn't all that interested.
"Kayth's about the second or third largest male from his clutch, and amoung the largest in the Weyr, but he doesn't think it's important." And D'mar didn't think so either. Sure, he was proud, but he would still love Kayth even if he was a humble little blue.
