B'can laughed. "Apolloth does. I sometimes think he got a bronze mindset, not a tan one. I love him a lot, but reinng him in can be somewhat hard at times."
At others, he didn't feel he should rein the tan in. Sometimes, he had good ideas. But B'can was not the one of the two who wanted to be Weyrleader. Not that B'can would mind some kind of leadership position when he was ready. A wing, perhaps.
"He's just...ambitious and a little fond of himself," the young man admitted.

"I sometimes wish Kayth would be like that, as bronzerider I'm expected to take a leadership role." Becoming Weyrleader wasn't on his agender for a number of years, even if he was about the same age of the current acting Weyrleader. L'han had years more experience as a rider and seemed to have a knack for leading the wings against Thread.
"Wingleader or Wingsecond wont be that bad, I'm happy just being a bronzerider."

B'can shrugged. "Apolloth wants to prove tans can lead just as well as bronzes can, and he's not much smaller than one. I think he was hoping to be the first tan Weyrleader..but L'han might beat us to it on that."
He considered. "I could probably handle a wing, eventually, once I have a few turns of solid experience under my belt." Apolloth would not have chose him if he couldn't, and that gave him more confidence than he had had before. A lot more.

"Sorry to disappoint you, but you just might be looking at the next Weyrleader." D'mar gave the younger boy a smug grin, easily an 'I'm older then you' expression as he lazed back in his chair. Kayth had already chased Kelth, what was to stop him from trying after Nayarath?
"Kayth is going to have to fly much better then he did last time then to beat Wuith."
The voice that was so close to his ear startled D'mar, who was sitting too firmly in his chair to fall. It was just the bronzerider's luck that L'han had over heard them. The black hair man only laughed, it had been quite some time since he had played games on other riders. It really had seemed like a lifetime since his days as a weyrling.
"Kayth almost flew into a tree." L'han explained to B'can as he sat opposite the weyrlings. Like them, he was only here for breakfast, having a bowl of porriage in his hand. "And I'm sorry to hear that you also think I've accomplished nothing as the first Tanrider Pern. Acting Weyrleader with the first tan-sired clutch on the hatching sands is hardly anything to be frowned on, and I'm only 20 turns old!"

B'can couldn't help but laugh. "Yeah. Great. I have to follow your act."
He sipped some more of his klah. "I wonder if tan sire is going to mean even *more* new colors. Or maybe a higher number of tans. We could use more tans, try to catch up with those crazy bronzes."
Guess hopped onto his shoulder, slipping a brown tail around his neck and chirping quite cheerfully. "And flew into a tree? Apolloth, you had better not do that, because *I* will have to live it down!'

"Nearly! He was too excited and over confindent. It was his first chase." D'mas said in defence of his bronze. Neither has been all that upset about losing anyway.
"And accidents happen. Nayarath's last flight nearly saw Labyrinth struck by lightning." L'han commented, rather sturnly. Labyrinth's dead would have been tragic, and a sad loss to the Weyr.
A third brown flitt dropped onto the table, head darted around to look at the others. He wasn't being jumpy, more overly cautious in an ill tempered way. Eron growled softly, causing the brown to bugle in return before clawing up L'han's arm to his shoulder. "Terror," the weyrleader replied. "Lives up to his name, doesn't he?"

B'can grinned. "I sometimes think the appropriate term for a group of firelizards is not a fair at all. it's a plague."
Guess gave him a hurt look at that. Stare, apparently not getting the insult, chittered cheerfully to the human, in typical sillygreen fashion.
"And Stare takes it as a compliment. Is that typical of greens, or what?" He reached out to scritch the smaller and younger of his flits. "She's pretty, though."

"We're up to our ears in them, about three in four of weyrfolk have at least one." L'han wasn't all that sure if they needed this many. With countless greens and barreds laying clutchs within the weyr they might outnumber dragons soon enough. Himself decided to try his luck with them and ended up with a nearly impossible companion.
"If you think she is silly, you haven't met Maideneth. She'll run circles around you and have a one sided conversation at the same time before you can say 'hello'." It had been hard for D'mas to miss a member of his own class of the past Turn. But nearly as soon as she had started, the brightly colored green was all burned out. Thank goodness for green's low endurence.
"True, she is possibly the fastest green ever hatched, but you have to be careful what you say to females." L'han warned. "Women would have to be the scarest things on the planet when they want to be."

"Greens are inherently silly," B'can noted. "But a lot of the green riders seem unusually sensible. I suppose they have to be, to keep their lifemates under control."
"And we are. It's a good job most of the green clutches aren't found, the way they breed." He glanced at Stare, wondering if he'd find her eggs or if they'd end up snake bait. It might be for the best, there were *so* many firelizards. "Especially as the barreds clutch bigger. I hear the white rider's barred laid like ten eggs and they all hatched."
Of course, that was presumably a particularly large clutch for a barred, but even so, there were smaller violet clutches!
