Our History
Pern was a sanctuary; everything was as it should be. But sometimes, things go wrong. Even in paradise. Thread was not planned for, but it was dealt with, indeed, it became a way of life. People adapted, and over the years, life on Pern only grew more lovely. Knowledge was forgotten but such things happen in civilizations on the terran world as well, nothing would come of it. Until, A.V.I.A.S was discovered. When that technology was uncovered; many things came to light. With it, the ability to get rid of Thread, of course, all the weyrs jumped at the chance to get rid of the menace that had plagued us for so many Turns. Now was our chance. I of course wasn’t born by this time, but I have read the records many times, wondering where I went wrong. What I missed.
Of course, it was only natural that the Holds would slowly turn away from the many weyrs after a short time. We were no longer needed; the great beasts were no longer guardians, but a pest. A decision was reached then that I will never agree with. Ever. An inoculation was made using the knowledge that A.V.I.A.S provided, an inoculation that wouldn’t stop the dragons breeding, but slow it down. They would rise less often; they would reach maturity at a later age. Thread had always been planned for; we’d always planned to get rid of it. That was why the numbers dropped in an interval, but obviously, that wasn’t slow enough. Dragonriders were nothing more than message carriers and watch whers. For day duty so more people could do other things.
It is just my opinion, but I believe Pern became lazy in that time. Lazy and unguarded. Finally, every weyr had only one queen and enough dragons to make up a fighting wing, perhaps two if they were lucky. Slowly, oh so slowly, we were dying out, and some of the distance between weyrs began. I Impressed to bronze Garlaerth when I was seventeen, and he flew after Chalorth’s daughter Illith, bonded to Xiana, when she rose. I was in doubt my self about my bronze being able to catch the young gold, but he did it. Garlaeth and I were weyrleaders, and despite the continued disrepair of the weyr’s relationships, we strove, Xiana and I to fix things.
Something was wrong with the inoculation though, Illith and Garlaeth’s first daughter proved sterile, unable to clutch, this was only the beginning. Chalorth had obviously passed her genes onto Illith, and she too, had that infernal infection in her system. As did my Garlaeth. It was around this time that the third moon appeared in the sky, blood red and every bit as unsettling as the Red Star had once been. We didn’t know what it was of course, not until it passed close enough to drop Thread, and suddenly, the training for the games was a matter of life and death, we had to fight the menace we were raised for. There were many casualties of course, but the weyrs stood strong. Or tried to. Especially when we found out that the newly named Death Moon, was a portion of the Red Star, blown off by A.V.I.A.S. Thread fell more often, and though perhaps not as heavily, we were ill prepared.
Illith and Garleath's first golden daughter was sterile. The inocculation had been passed through both dragons to that first daughter, and around this time, the third moon appeared in the sky. None knew what it was, but D'lis continued to drill his riders, the games were becoming a matter of life and death, he could feel it coming. When Thread did fall, many were lost, amoung them the golden daughter, Tyneth, of Illith and Garleath as she tried to help another wounded dragon and was dragged between with them. There was nothing they could do, but keep training, drills were doubled, harsher, with so few dragons left to defend, it was no suprise that everyone looked to Illith again.
Illith flew again in this time, the Holders needed something to brighten it. She flew, and clutched, among them a single golden egg.. Now, we wait.
