Vengeful Oceans Hatching
Sabre and Sabresk stood together, off to one side of the clutch. The gold pair had their eyes trained on the group of candidates they had found. One looked at them with distaste, the other wearily, knowing that she had far more work ahead of her than she wanted to admit. Her pregnancy was more pronounced now than it was even a week ago, not that it was evident underneath her concealing shirt. She was not planning on telling Itunas about his impending fatherhood, not anytime soon.
The eggs were rocking.
Sabresk left Sabre's side to circle the clutch, nosing each of them as if to quiet the frantic hatchling inside. Challenger had the most cracks threading through the deep blue shell, but it was Gale that first broke. An angry blue kicked his way out of the shell, , and squalled at the circle of candidates. Sabresk was right next to him as fast as she could move, nudging him towards the candidates.
Sabre's fair of fire lizards were everywhere. Akila stayed closest to Sabresk, while Kelna flew in a wide patrol. The female giggled and chittered at each other, excited because of the Hatching.
The Gale blue lunged for the candidates, butting one of the girls in the kneecap. It was Silia.
Just as his sibling chose, the brown hatchling from Charybidis made his choice. Led by fire lizards, he nibbled on Gorrian's boot, creeling plaintively for food.
Challenger finally snapped, revealing the first green of the clutch. She took her time choosing, letting her nose to pick the least offensive body. She shrieked as she ran to her choice, the young Japarill.
((Shards, I'ma have to do the enxt bit after ya'll reply. My muse has a habit of dying halfway through a post.))

The hatching was so exciting! All of the candidates had been accepted by Sabresk but for a slight change to normal custom, and to be sure a gold egg didn’t end up being given to a male, they had let the eggs hatch as a clutch and let them gain the attention of the hatchlings. It was ye unknown wether Wher’s would bred true to their traditional colors, but so far so good. A fine blue, brown and green and all had been attracted by those around them.
Lianly did feel a little off set though, all the other candidates were turns older then she was but she was determined not to let it show. She couldn’t! The wher’s might pick it up and attack her, thinking she was food. She had been told wher’s had more capability to think for themselves, and could turn feral if not bonded. Well she wouldn’t let that happen! She would be strong! And she would show the others that age would not matter in who bonded what.

Gorrian's heart pounded with excitement as the first eggs began to crack, though his face didn't show it. He was stoic and sound as ever. Tilla had been forced, by Gorrian, to stay away from the Hatching. He wasn't sure if the fire-lizard would take to kindly to the wher, if he did Impress.
His eyes followed the blue to Silia, but at the side of his vision he caught the movement of another egg. A brown wher popped out of an egg and was herded towards the Candidates by fire-lizards. Gorrian watched it as it waddled over to... him! He knelt down to the wher hatchling, eyes unblinkingly examining the beautiful newborn.
Gorrian grabbed a bowl of meat from the feeding table and held out a piece to the little brown wher. He thought it would be quite fitting if he Impressed a brown. He, himself, wore brown and had brown hair and such. Two of a kind, they'd be! However, he was getting ahead of himself. The wher still needed to accept his offering and, in turn, taste his blood. Gorrian couldn't help but feel his lips twitch slightly from the frown that was normally plastered to his face.
-----
Korrik stood, ready for action, eyes set on the eggs. The three that had hatched seemed to have already chosen those they wanted to Impress. Hopefully one of the remaining eggs would contain a wher who would see him as their first choice. His green eyes flicked from egg to egg.
Mainly, he kept his eyes on those that were his favourite colour. Silly, to be sure, but he thought they were especially gorgeous. He would accept any wher, of course, but the eggs were pretty, too. The red egg looked a little intimidating, which was odd for an egg, but he couldn't but get and ominous feeling when he looked at it. The purple and brown one would be nicer without the brown... and that yellow egg seemed pretty arrogant. Again, how could an egg be arrogant?
Kork tried to quiet his mind and remind himself that the whers inside the eggs were more important than the colour of the egg. He was just so excited that his mind was racing with any thought that even touched upon his mind-wanderings. Although inside his head, he seemed absolutely mad, Kork was standing feet shoulder-width apart, hands behind back, shoulders back, head high. He looked taller than he was and quite heroic, if not slightly silly. He was acting a little overly proud of himself for making it all the way to this Hatching.

Silia knew what she had to do. Stand firm, show no fear, and be ready to offer the bonding blood to the wher.
She had expected the queen to give her the egg, but they had decided to do this a little more like a dragon hatching, to let the young ones come to the people they wanted.
Head held high, she stepped into the hatching cave. "Thank you, Sabresk," she said, bowing slightly to the wher queen. She appreciated being given this chance.
One egg cracked, started to fall apart, and then a different one exploded, shards flying everywhere as the blue emerged. Now that one had attitude. Watching it, she almost forgot to be careful about getting out of the way, and when it moved, she was not at all ready.
Suddenly, there was a blue wher at her feet. There was food nearby. Food. And blood. She needed to blood him, if he was to be hers. There was no hesitation on either matter. "You're a handsome fellow," she told him. Would he accept her offerings? She knew there was some possibility, that until the offered blood was taken the bond was not made, the name not given.
She was peripherally aware that a brown had gone to one of the boys and a green to another. Her world, though, had focused down to absolute concentration on the ugly, noisy creature. Who was, however, a lovely shade of blue. And handsome...in a wher kind of way.

Shiane wasn't even sure how she'd managed to get this far. Standing in the wher cave with the eggs hatching. If she listened carefully, she could pick out individual voices. People she knew, if not as well as she might have had she been a little more outgoing. What would happen? Shiane knew nothing about hatchings, only knew that she could hear the soft tappings of the shells, the excited shift of the candidates.
The chittering of firelizards followed this, and Shiane shifted her weight uneasily. The amount of noise was as frustrating as a lack of it, she wasn't completely certain what was going on until a startling crack echoed through her skull. Of course, that would happen, the eggs had to hatch, but that didn't make Shiane's sudden fright any easier as she turned her head towards the sound. Then there was creeling, and more cracking. Three that she could count that really.
Then there was a final squeal, one that made Shiane wince and step back slightly. She could only imagine the colours, how pretty they must be. Then there was of course the utter love that would come with it, the feel of knowing, only knowing that they were yours and you were theirs. Nothing more mattered. So much was going on though, and if three had already moved off and hatched to perfectly normal people, what hope did she, a blind candidate have?

Japarill could hardly believe the eggs were finally hatching. His heart was pounding as he watched the eggs shake, the Challenger looked especially close to hatching, but then it was the Gale that beat it to the punch. Pari watched a Blue fall to the sands and then bound for the girls.
It wasn't the Challenger egg that hatched second either, now Pari's attention was distracted as a Brown escaped the Charybidis egg. This one came to the boys, but to another Candidate Pari wasn't too familiar with instead of him. It seemed none of the whers had really Impressed yet, no blood had been taken at least, but they seemed to have chosen Theirs.
Finally Pari saw the Challenger egg hatch into a Green. Pari watched her, seeing as she was the only hatchling who hadn't gone to someone yet, but she was taking her time choosing and he eventually turned his attention back to the eggs, wondering what would hatch next. A sudden shriek brought his attention back to the Green, and his eyes widened in surprise as the wher ran to him.
Pari grabbed some meat and held it out to the wher, knowing she would need food as well as blood. It was a Green but he was smiling giddily just the same, utterly pleased that a wher had actually come to him. Would she accept his offerings? Even still wet and slightly discolored with the egg goo, he thought she was a lovely shade of green and overall a perfect wher... he could only hope she would really Impress.

Roksana stood with the other candidates, attempting to uphold her usual calm, cool demeanor. However, that was difficult with eggs bursting open and clumsy, ugly-slash-cute wher babies stumbling all over the place, looking for their chosen candidates. This was a bit of an untraditional wher hatching, as she understood it. Usually, candidates were given eggs, instead of letting the whers choose for themselves. Maybe this would promote stronger bonds between wher and handler.
A blue hatched and launched himself as Silia, one of the other candidates she had met before. She grinned, glad Silia had Impressed. Next was a brown and green, who both went to boys. At least it seemed like the whers still didn't care much about gender. She wondered which eggs would hatch next. It was almost a shame to see them shatter, the shells were so pretty.

”When you get chosen by a wher, Grab a bowl of meat scraps, and feed them. We’dd cover blooding later.”
Sabre chewed on the end of her braid, excited by trying not to show it. Hatchings were a happy occasion, right? Then why did it feel so much like a death anthem? She rested her hands against the slight swell of her stomach, an unconscious gesture that she didn’t notice.
_~_
Meanwhile, two more eggs had revealed their occupants, both greens. Beach Surf was the first to open, with a lovely green in spring colors. She hid behind her mother, seemingly timid. Serpents Attack was not so timid. She barreled into Roksana at full force, probably knocking her down. Beach Surf green minced her way to the candidates, and creeled piteously at the nearest- Korrik.
((Sorry they’re so crappy- my muse is dead.))

Korrik grabbed a bowl of meat and instantly started feeding the little green wher. So cute and innocent! He sat down before her and put the bowl on the ground. Kork slowly fed her meat while wiping egg goo off of her head with one hand. He could feel himself on the verge of tears, though he held them back. "No need to fear," he cooed, his voice barely a whisper, "I'll keep you safe from harm." Kork's eyes couldn't move from the little wher. She was beautiful!

Two greens hatched next. One barrelled straight for her. Roksana couldn't move out of the way in time, and the green collided with her. She tumbled to the ground, and heard something crack as he hand was caught underneath her. She cried out, cradling her hand to her chest as she rolled out from under the wher. It looked bent, and she thought it was broken. "Shards." She looked up to glare at the wher, but found it difficult to be angry with the creature who had chosen her.
"Well, come on then," she said briskly, standing up and leading the wher to the food. She took a bowl of meat and started feeding it to the eager green, who ate voraciously. "Don't choke," Roksana muttered, slowing her pace.

Silia mentally made a note of two more greens. The blue was rapacious, eating and eating.
They were put together so awkwardly, she thought, studying him. Yet, they were tough, capable creatures. He was handsome, in his own way. No golds or bronzes yet.
She wondered if there would be a gold and if so, who she would choose.
Wait...that was Roksana with a green. She smiled at the other girl before turning all of her attention back to her blue.

Yes. That made sense. If a wher chose you, then you would feed it. That completely made sense, it was however, the if that made Shiane's head tilt downwards, almost as though she were looking at her feet. Not that she'd been doing any looking before that, listening, yes. Straining her hearing to pick up even the slightest of sounds, but it was hard to hear over the cracking of shells, the chatter of people as they crooned to their new bondeds, and the creeling of those hatched, but not yet chosen.
Shards, but it was awfully frustrating, not seeing the colours! Yes, Shiane wanted to see what the fuss was about. Yet at the same time, it was oddly pleasing to hear the difference between a male voice and a female one, even as babies. And ever more so, the subtle difference between the sounds of each baby, and then the way people moved. Some cautiously, some confidently. Would those confident, not shifting their feet, get the gold or bronze? Whers weren't that different to dragons and no one understood the choices they made.

It was Jump who alerted her. Jump, even though she was the same as she always was, had a new spring to her flight. She was needed, but for what? And why were the other flitters so intent on getting her out of bed? And why the shards was she in bed anyway? She sat up, and felt something drop from her chest to clatter onto the ground. It was a piece of bone that had cut marks in it, and she thought it looked amazingly like a small dragonet. Or like a fire-lizard. Something cold touched her hand, and she looked on the bed to see a knife, its cutting blade facing away from her hand. Had she been making this masterpiece? Had she been patiently whittling away at the bone? She couldn’t remember, and that was a problem, yet at the same time, it wasn’t. She remembered that she couldn’t remember lots of things.
And so, urged by her fire-lizards, Chloee got out of bed. She pulled back her hair, putting it into a ponytail, and shrugged on clothes. If she had known why her fire-lizards were so upset, she probably would have hurried. As it was, she was going faster than her normal pace. Her fire-lizards were egging her on. Even Blubber, who was usually lazy and didn’t want to do anything, was suddenly diving at her, shrieking at her, and trying to get her to move. What was up with them? Then, quite suddenly, Chloee remembered. The Wher’s eggs were going to hatch soon. Maybe that was what was getting them all excited. Even Jump was excited, and that was saying something.
“Alright, alright. I’m going!” Chloee said, pushing away Sphinx as the Green tried to nibble at her ear. Sigma flashed between, then right back, as if checking on the eggs and her at the same time. This was Sabresk’s clutch. And Sabresk had a wonderful clutch. The girl knew she was already late, which would make her unfavorable in the eyes of Sabresk and her Bonded. Possibly.
But, maybe it wasn’t her fault for once. Sometimes forgetfulness could be a virtue, sometimes a sin. Chloee wasn’t sure what type this was, but she hoped it was leaning toward virtue. Both Sabresk and her Bonded knew about Chloee’s forgetfulness. In fact, the whole Weyr knew about her forgetfulness. It simply wasn’t her fault. So, as she entered the chamber, she bowed low to the Wherhandler and her Wher, hoping pitifully that they would forgive her. Then, as if hoping nothing had happened, she stood with the candidates that hadn’t been Bonded to whers yet. Maybe she would have a Wher… Then, maybe, she would have more help in remembering things.

A lot of Greens had hatched, Pari noticed as his own tore at the meat he offered. Korrik had gotten one too... it was nice to know he wasn't he only guy. Pari had sort of been hoping for a Brown... but it had gone to the boy who was totally dressed in brown. He doubted whers were very attracted to specific colors (like their own), but it was sort of a funny match.
Whatever he had felt he wanted earlier, Pari was very happy with the lovely little Green at his feet now. He liked watching the little flashes of sharp teeth as she grabbed meat from his hands, or just thrust her nose into he bowl he was holding when he wasn't quick enough to get her some himself. He only nodded when Sabre spoke- of course they needed to feed the hatchlings, and he would be alright waiting for the blooding. He had known it was coming for some time, but blooding wasn't the friendliest, even if it was very to the point, name for an occasion and the idea frightened him a little. But he would keep that a secret.

Wher name doesn't effect bonding strength, but I'll release the offical list. You do not need to keep these names, as any alteration of the handler's name (first part though) with -sk on the end is acceptable. Please inform us though if you do wish to change.
Gorrian to brown Gorrisk Japarill to green Japarisk Silia to blue Silisk Korrik to green Korsk Roksana to green Roksask Cholee to brown Chlosk Lianly to blue Liansk Piyor to bronze Pisk Shiane to brown Shiansk

Since Japarill usually goes by Pari, it makes more sense to me if his wher was called Parisk rather than Japarisk, if that's alright?

Post by Jenth on Nov 10, 2008 20:54:12 GMT -5
I would say no for the following 2 reasons;
Firstly Pari is only a nickname, created as a fun/cute/short alternitive of his real name. A wher bonds mentally and would reconise their true name and follow suit. Many dragons don't have nicknames and those that do have had them created by their rider's, and even then most don't like them so I don't think a wher would either.
Secondly we already have a wher named Pisk in this clutch, and it would be best not to have two whers with very similar names to avoid confusion however slight
If you would like something smaller you could have Jask instead if it more suits your tastes. If you really want to have Parisk Japarill would have to permenently change his name to Peri forever. Still, it would take some time for the wher to reconise her new name
