For once, a certain tanrider had no duties to perform. He was hoping that before too long Inolyn could join him. For right now, he was settled against his dragon in the bowl, not far from the violetrider's weyr.
There were, he thought, advantages to being with a queenrider who had a ground weyr...he could always stay there if he didn't feel like either riding or climbing stairs.
Right now, he didn't feel like moving, and neither did Apolloth. Jorindath was not yet quite egg heavy, although she would be soon. The weyrfolk were already betting something weird would happen with the clutch. Nobody was going to forget Angel's Impression any time soon. Let alone the young woman herself, of course.
There was even a solid pool that she would lay a violet and it would choose a boy. B'can thought that unlikely...so far, a violet had not laid any kind of queen and he doubted that would change except maybe with a bronze sire...an experiment he hoped would be tried with Fioloth, not Jorindath...

It had now been just over a month since Jorindath's flight, and while the forming eggs were barely bulging at her belly the violet was slowing down. Many of the dragons were noticing, giving the queen a little extra space but she had managed to convince a few greens and blues to play with her in the lake. In the last month she wont even like leaving her Weyr, feeling so slow heavy. Not long now...
Nip rolled around on the floor as Inolyn finished her note to the Smith hall. A couple of the boys in the lower caverns were showing an interest in learning the craft, and with a new clutch on the way it would be wise to order more buckles for riding straps early. Keloc waited patiently as the message harness was strapped around him and quickly took off. Chances were likely he would take his time coming back.
Walking out onto the ledge for some fresh air she nearly laughed that Apolloth wasn't far away. There were two reason that was; that Apolloth was trying to stand guard protectively over his queen or they placed themselves there 'coincidentally' so they would have to cross paths. The later was unneeded, B'can shared her weyr often enough that he didn't need to create excuses to be around her. He could have been walking around naked while she was writing reports and not bat an eye... unless to sneak a peek.
It was only natural that she found herself walking over to them, taking a break she told herself. "Its unlike you two to be lying around like a pair of lazy Weyrlings."

B'can glanced up. "I think everyone benefits from pretending to be a lazy weyrling every now and then." The fact that it was out of character for him surely only meant that it was entitled. "How's Jorindath feeling?"
And yes, Apolloth had been paying special attention to his queen. Pretty soon, he would be hunting for her, as was the duty of the clutch sire. This time around, of course, he knew the drill. She would want for nothing...well, except perhaps amusement. Sitting on eggs was hardly the most entertaining of duties.

"She's doing well, won't be long before she'll start complaining about the weight. It should be a good clutch." The early weight might mean a large clutch, a good sign. Inolyn settled herself down next to B'can, leaning gently against his shoulder. Nip had decided to join them, laying his head in his mistress's lap to have his roan ears scratched.
You know, you can always join me instead of just watching The violet spoke to both riders and her mate. It was summer, and while dragons liked to lay in the sun the riders normally did as much as they could to cool down.

"Jorindath has a point. Water would feel good right about now." His two firelizards had already flitted over to join the dragon. "Of course, that would also mean moving..."
Which with Inolyn where she was was even less desirable than it had been before the queenrider had joined him. He definitely didn't want to move, but man, Jorindath's offer was tempting.
"And a big clutch is always good." The dragon would have some clue by now, this being her third clutch, of what she was carrying. It had been an...interesting...flight, but at least it strangeness did not seem to have affected the eggs. Yet.
Of course, they were Jorindath's babies. They'd do *something* strange. B'can was sure of it.

"Hmmm..." Inolyn had thought it was strange that Apolloth hadn't moved already, normally he would jump at his queen's offer. Maybe now he had re-established his position as her mate he wasn't trying so hard to hold her attention and affection, at least till the eggs were lain. Jorindath might be mild tempered, but the only dragon she would let near her eggs would be her mate.
"Well, swimming would be an awful lot of moving. We can always just sit in the shade somewhere..." Fingers rose up and tickled at his side playfully.

Maybe he hadn't moved because, after all, B'can was leaning on him. After a moment, B'can shifted. "We should stand up. Apolloth does want to go join Jorindath even if we don't, and I was sitting on his toe."
Oops. But then, something as large as a dragon was handy to sit on, or lean against, and the tan's sun-warmed hide was certainly pleasant. "Sitting in the shade does sound good, though. Relaxing. Enjoying the fact that we don't have any duties right now."
Especially Inolyn...queenriders had a lot to do and he'd even seen the violet weyrling with a stack of hides.

Inolyn got to her feet, dusting off her skirt before offering a hand to B'can. Since he wasn't in a moving mood he might appreciate the help. Once they were clear he violet rider gave the tan an affectionate slap on the thigh, "Sorry handsome, go get your girl!"
"Come, there's some shade over there." Inolyn pointed to the shade created in the shadow of her dragon's ledge. It wasn't very far, and they could still watch their lifemates play.
Jorindath was watching them no, having climbed out of the lake on the closest bank. Her companions took the opportunity to fly up on to ledges to dry and sun themselves. The queen only needed her mate to keep her company.

B'can did indeed take Inolyn's hand and move away from the tan dragon. Apolloth did a sort of glide hop to join the violet once the humans were out of his way.
"They really complement each other in color, don't they." In a different way from golds and bronzes, that were much closer to one another. But Jorindath was warm and Apolloth pale...the tan was light against his mate's richness.
B'can wandered over to the shade, in no real hurry. There was nothing to do, for once, so why rush anything. It was good to be able to relax.

Inolyn looked back over her shoulder, "They were made for each other, of course they would look good together." It was a half tease, but she knew what he meant. Tan would look pale against a gold, violet would look inferior against the metallic sheen of a bronze, and a brown's dark color wouldn't compliment violet at all.
As they walked Inolyn slipped her hand into his, just enjoying the company. It sure beat her lonely weyr with no company except a stack of hides and Nip, who had now run off to roll himself in the grass or see his mate. So much for companionship.
"So Apolloth isn't concerned that he won't get to lead the Weyr now he's caught Jori? Narayath won't let him catch her now."

"Apolloth is not going to accept that, although I'm doing my best. He still thinks he's better than any of the bronzes...although *I* don't want to lead the Weyr."
B'can never really had. He had been, to be honest, surprised not to Impress a brown. But then, maybe he was somewhere between brown and bronze and, thus, perfect for tan. "He'll come around. Jorindath is beautiful, anyway."
Especially seen through Apolloth's eyes, but there was still that core of ambition in the tan. He would, though, accept his place. B'can could feel that. It was just taking...time.

"You think he would be happy, being the mate of a queen. If anything happens to Nayarath, its currently a half-half split but Jorindath could see herself as the senior queen." And who knew what kind of disaster that could work up, and possibly the death of dragon kind. If a violet couldn't lay more queens, the dragon breed would be lost with the golds. Not to mention she had already 'experienced' the fear people had to change.
"But if he really thinks so little of Jorindath for being a junior queen then he might not catch her a third time." Inolyn stated in a matter-of-fact way. Even a violet wanted her mate to understand that it was an honor to be chosen to sire the next generation, but if there was one thing Apolloth was good at it was sweet-talking. His position was safe.

OOC: Remember there's another gold at the 'other' Weyr . "Yeah. Well. He seems to know exactly how to get her wrapped around his tail." Which was slightly crude, but showed that B'can wasn't too worried. "She's a good dragon, and he knows it. And she lays good clutches." If any violet could manage to produce another queen, he thought it would be Jorindath. Of course, it would be a few more months before they found out how well Fioloth clutched. The redder violet would never be mistaken, mind, for her older sister.

((ooc- but thats at the 'other' weyr, and who's to know if she would lay a gold?))
"I wouldn't say that exactly. Queens always wants the best, maybe he's just the best breeding stock." Inolyn was sure the tan wouldn't like to think he was just being used like a herdbeast stud. It probably would have no effect on his ego though, as long as he could say he was the better with something.
"Or maybe Jori chose him again because of us?" Inolyn smiled at her mate, not seeing any other man being able to take his place. Not that B'can would let any other man take his place at her side.
Having reached the shade of the ledge, she let go of his hand and sat down with her back against the stone wall. "So maybe it's you who should stay on my good side!" Despite the graceful air of authority she showed that would make even a Lady jealous, she was unable to hold a straight face and was grinning cheekily the whole time.

B'can laughed at that. "Who knows. She was very determined to pick him, though. And I have heard that some queens will keep choosing the same male over and over...especially if the riders are weyrmated. So...good side it is."
He settled down next to her. "Not that I get the impression that's particularly hard." They fit together well...and he was eternally grateful for that. He had never dreamed when he came to the Weyr that he would find such a woman...and it was not just because she rode a queen.

"Well, I don't think you're capable of messing up so I fairly sure you're safe. We're apparently a perfect pair." She wasn't a particularly fussy woman, and not a hard person to please. With mating lust being a fairly common phenomenon within the Weyr, even if B'can slept with another woman Inolyn didn't think she could bring herself to be mad at him. As long as he loved her, and was honest with her, the violet rider had no reason to replace her weyrmate.
Inolyn rested her head on his shoulder with a content little sigh. "So I was speaking with the healers the other day. They aren't sure, it's still too early, but i may be pregnant."

B'can blinked. "Pregnant?"
Seriously...pregnant? And it was his, he knew that for sure, if she was. He thought about that for a moment, and decided he definitely liked that idea. Besides, any kid of a tanrider and a violetrider would likely have a good future at the Weyr.
"I'd say be careful, but I know you always are." And they would not be in a position to *need* to go between until the eggs hatched at least, and by then she would know for sure, surely. And he trusted her.
But pregnant. With his kid. No, he had not expected that particular piece of news. What man, really, did?

"Couldn't have happened at a better time. With Jori egg heavy and Weyr bound I can take it as easy as I want." Of course there was still the record keeping, teaching Kari her duties, taking care of her dragon, lizards and kagen as well as all the other miscellaneous task of a queenrider. Still, she had to look after herself just in case, false calls weren't all that new to her.
"I've been told I would make a lousy queen. With all the times we've 'mated' I've yet to produce a 'clutch'." Inolyn didn't need to say who had told her that, but a baby just sounded so much like a good idea right now. Planning it would have only spoiled the wonderful feeling of surprise.
"I would feel terrible now, if it turns out I'm not now that I've told you."

B'can laughed a bit. "I overheard once a conversation with a hold birthing woman. She said a woman should not consider herself barren unless she has been married for ten turns with no offspring...and even then it's more likely to be the man with the problem."
Not that most men would admit that. "Don't worry about it. I know you can't always tell right away and there can be false alarms."
Queen dragons, of course...but then, they produced a lot of eggs at once. A subfertile queen, B'can supposed, would produce smaller clutches, but not none at all.

"Sounds like too many ifs, ands, maybes and buts. We're being lazy, remember?" Better to dismiss the whole problem then deal with worrying. Female riders were known to miscarry often, maybe hadn't even known. It was the main reason that if a green rider wanted to be a mother, she often had the plan and work towards it. Most Weyrbrats came from the other staff of the Weyr, normally fathered by male riders.
"I'm not about to get crazy ideas and start sleeping around, just because my dragon has babies on the brain." Again, maybe it was just a shadow feeling from her dragon. Dragons, they certainly made life interesting and sometimes complicated.
"So, If you were never searched, never came to the Weyr, and never Impressed, where do you thing you be right now?"
